1/2 of the civil rights complaints buried in the past month relate to disability.

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Education published the information collection for the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA®) form in the Federal Register, the first public step in the FAFSA development process. The Department is on track to launch the 2026-27 FAFSA by Oct. 1, 2025 as mandated by the FAFSA Deadline Act.

The Department also announced that current and future FAFSA forms will rightfully reflect the biological reality that there are only two sexes: male and female. Department officials will remove “nonbinary” as a gender identification option from the current year’s FAFSA form.

“The Trump Administration will correct the failures of the last Administration and ensure students and families can easily access the FAFSA form in a timely manner,” said Acting Under Secretary James Bergeron. “Resolving ongoing problems with the 2024-25 form, reflecting biological reality by referencing sex identifiers, and beginning the process for the 2026-27 form on-time will allow the Department to earn back the trust of the American people. Families and students depend on the FAFSA form to plan their futures, and any release delays or unnecessary politicization of the form is wholly unacceptable.” Screenshot showing open comment form on federal register site

Department of Education FAFSA changes are open for public comment. The changes include requiring trans students to misgender themselves and removes the nonbinary option on forms. Note: comment period is 60 days, and comments are publicly visible.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council / Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports postsecondary-based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences. / Le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines (CRSH) du Canada est l’organisme subventionnaire fédéral qui encourage et appuie la recherche et la formation en recherche en sciences humaines au niveau postsecondaire.

Something American ECR academics might be interested to know is that NSERC and SSHRC just raised their post-doc stipend to $70k last year, so if, I dunno, a dictatorial monkey were to turn off your funding and you were looking for other postdoc options, look north. www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca

Mine was a cava-induced confession by a theologian and minister who is distressed that he can’t seem to pray well anymore. “How can one truly do theology when you can’t pray?” Haven’t heard this spiritual passion and authenticity maybe ever at AAR in my 15+ yrs.It was a highlight of a conversation.

What is the one idea or conversation from #sblaar24 you can’t stop thinking about?

Definitely going to miss Rev Dr Lauren bringing it back to Luther. “You know who did that first? Luther!”

Long table in hotel conference centre with panelists sitting along it as well as an interpreter signing.

Wow, what a panel!

Willie Jennings, Paul Jones, Natalia Marandiuc, Miriam Spies, and Amos Yong offered a really stimulating conversation on @lisadpowell.bsky.social’s The Disabled God Revisited.

I’m pretty sure it’s outlawed at AAR. Might have already been. They were trying to get out of the AAR fees I suspect. But it was a fairly prominent seminary.

I had a similar experience minus the poop. I waited in the AAR center for ages waiting for them to call me just to find out they were having their interview in a hotel room. I was terribly late and they were very annoyed bc apparently it was in the email but also ick hotel room not a suite just beds

If you run into me at #AARSBL24, you might get a bookmark for SPIRIT HOUSE (www.crossroads-spirithouse.org) or a postcard with a 30% discount on my book, BLACK RELIGION IN THE MADHOUSE (nyupress.org/978147982978...). Maybe both.

My initial reaction thought was: is this the panel on Reichel’s book? Nope. That’s yet another panel. Affordances will be getting some attention this weekend!

Seriously that Syndicate needs to come out! I may have to meekly approach the missing contributor in San Diego and do some begging.

Find it hard to believe this line up of dream scholars are responding to my book on Sunday at #SBLAAR. Their comments are starting to come in, and I need to get busy with my response. Willie Jennings is up first! Unreal.

Second professor T—the Belgium version of you can get it—available through PBS masterpiece. Better than the BBC remake.

See I think relics are rad. They almost pull me in with the relics and the saints and then I attend mass with 8 men at the table with hands extended for the consecration and I am pulled back to reality.

I couldn’t focus on one of the “guys” bc the corpus we were taught and the whole nature of our seminars was so dominantly male I ended up (as did a few of my friends the program) had to write on women to survive the dissertation in that context. But it didn’t set me up for a community of scholars…

At least you are getting asked. I didn’t get invited to contributed to volumes or even review until I was deep into my career. It felt like I could never break into that!! I was amazed by all the invitations friends were getting for essays etc.
