Excited to share this paper because it does something new: We're testing the implicit coordination hypothesis proposed by Weber & Wasner. Analyzing earnings calls, we find that large, economy-wide costs shocks make executives feel very good indeed. Open access:

Very honored to receive the 2025 Francine Frankel Prize for the best book on South Asian Politics from APSA.

Many thanks to the award committee. And it is a privilege to receive this alongside scholars like Adam and Tariq whose work I have long admired.

Citizen Marx A discussion ofΒ Bruno Leipold's book,Β Citizen Marx: Republicanism and the Formation of Karl Marx's Social and Political Thought, with comments by Corey Robin.Citizen Marx is the first book to offer a comprehensive exploration of Marx’s relationship to republicanism, arguing that it is essential to understanding his thought. Challenging common depictions of Marx that downplay or ignore his commitment to politics, democracy, and freedom, Leipold shows that Marx viewed democratic political institutions as crucial to overcoming the social unfreedom and domination of capitalism. One of Marx’s principal political values, Leipold contends, was a republican conception of freedom, according to which one is unfree when subjected to arbitrary power.PanelBruno Leipold is a Fellow in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he will also take up an Assistant Professor position in 2025. He is the co-editor of Radical Republicanism: Recovering the Tradition's Popular Heritage (Oxford University Press) and works on the thought of Karl Marx, republicanism and democratic theory.Corey Robin is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of The Enigma of Clarence Thomas, The Reactionary Mind, and Fear, and a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and other publications. He is currently at work on King Capital, a political theory of capitalism, which is under contract with Random House. In 2024-25, he will be a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar and the Carl F. Cranor Visiting Scholar, delivering lectures on a variety of topics at colleges and universities across the United States.

Event on @brunoleipold.com's brilliant new book 'Citizen Marx' at the New School for Social Research.

Here is how to disable Copilot in Word on a Mac. My version was slightly different. It was this:

Expand "Word" menu > Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy > go down to "Connected Experiences" and click Manage Connected Experiences > uncheck all the boxes > restart Word (cont'd)

I am not giving a definition of democracy, which surely requires more than a tweet :) I am just trying to explain what I think it meant for people to feel that the current state of affairs were not particularly democratic given the way power is structured and operates.

In the sense of popular aspiration and opinions being reflected in government and laws, the sense that it is a government for and of us etc., I don’t think many felt that way.

These are some beautiful reflections by Pepe Mujica, the former Uruguayan president who is in his deathbed.
The most decent and honorable -- the most human -- head of state of my lifetime.
