Just received my first book scam! An email from someone trying to get me listed on to Goodreads Reading Challenge 2026 (for only a small fee of course). Sad it wasn't one of those ones from 'author Toni Morrison' or 'author Donna Tartt' but still. A very strange grift I have to say...

My grandmother was a cleaner most of her working life in the UK, and never learned English because her colleagues were Spanish-speakers, or Portuguese-speakers, or Italian. So they all just spoke in their native languages to one another - I often wonder about what that must have been like

Mostly in bed today, out with another virus caught from my son, with @jencalleja.bsky.social's Fair: The Life-Art of Translation, (published by @prototypepubs.bsky.social) for company. This bit, on front of house staff, cleaners, and languages (at an unnamed place I can guess!) caught my eye:

the government paid £4 million for a website that simply links out to AI training courses from other companies rather than using that money to make something actually bespoke

which I guess is actually a pretty accurate representation of this whole damn thing 🥲

There is money for "education" if and only if that money is being directly funneled to corporations. Anything involving actual learning, however, well there's no magic money tree

Monday and the start of a second week of being prevented from working by my employer, the University of Sheffield. Management has decided that massive damage to staff morale, student experience and the university’s reputation is worth it in a futile attempt to break the union. Shame on them.
