in reality, any image can disturb us, and i think if ppl were more honest w themselves, theyd recognize that the images that left an indelible haunting impression upon them weren't necessarily "graphic" at all. the only thing dramatizing the significance of violent/sexual imagery seems to accomplish

extremely grating the completely fantastical way ppl talk abt imgs of violence/sex, as if, by virtue of their subject matter, they have some inevitably traumatic effect on an impressionable viewer. or alternately, that these images wear down ones ability to react to real violence ("desensitization")
