You don’t have to be a republican or a democrat to be against war. You just have to be a person who is against war. It helps if you can see humanity in the stranger. War is not the language of a person who loves.

I would be very wary of taking Iranian claims at face value until verified, just as I would be wary of taking Trump’s claims at face value until verified.

American athletes who agree to be props for MAGA propaganda have no right to complain about getting booed during the national anthem.

This league is so quick to shutdown anything deemed a distraction, but hey, not this. Not even with the playoffs less than two months away.

No one is saying USA shouldn't celebrate, but when you choose to this way... it's going to be political and it's going to create negativity.

This isn't just a standard 'winning team visits the WH in a planned visit' -- it's the state of the damn union, as the NHL resumes.

The problem isn't that the president called the team (he should have!) it's that the gold-medal winning women's team was the punch line, instead of being celebrated.

not sure how the "it's not politics" crowd is going to square having hockey players attend the "cheer the politicians i like and boo the ones i don't" gala. should be an interesting and memorable evening!

If you’re an American service member who gets killed in a retaliatory strike, your family can take comfort in the fact that it was done in service of making the host of Celebrity Apprentice feel like a big man for a minute, before he moved on to something else and forgets about this forever

Human brains feed off of negativity. Negative thoughts are easily digested and play in a loop in your mind all of the time. The reality, however, is that there is also A LOT OF GOOD happening every single minute. You have to do more work to pay attention to the good but it's worth it.

When you control the Senate, the House and White House and have been in power for a year but still blame Biden and Obama for the indefensible mess you've made, I think it's you that has Trump Derangement Syndrome

I'll believe those who say they want to "put Christ back in Christmas" when 1) they practice Advent as a season of waiting, anticipation, and silence, 2) celebrate the full 12 days of Christmas following December 25, and 3) hold off the Wise Men story until January 6.

And in that pause between pitch and contact - longer than logic, shorter than hope - we remembered why baseball existed long before we judged a sport's value by viral moments and betting apps. It is the romance of failure. The mortal beauty of trying and missing seven times out of 10 and still being considered great. It is the only sport where patience is a weapon, and panic the surest death. You cannot simply run out the clock in baseball; you must face it, pitch by terrifying pitch, until it finally releases you.

Did not expect one of the best paragraphs I’d read about baseball would come from an Irish newspaper

I know a number of well-educated MAGAs. I too wish folks on the left would quit treating this as a lack of education.
What they lack isn't education, or even intelligence.
What they lack is empathy.

Because boy, howdy, nobody knows ritual and symbolism like the Catholic Church, and having it turned squarely back on the Very Bad Catholics who have been the public standard-bearers of wielding it for evil for so long is really good to see.

Contemporary proponents of the death penalty seem to have serene confidence in the ability of the modern secular state to administer death sentences justly, as if the contemporary secular arm had such a great record of deciding who has a right to live and who doesn’t.

"That sounds plausible" or "that fits my preferred narrative" are not reasons to endorse/post/repost (especially memes). Fact check yourself or you are part of the problem. It won't eliminate all misinformation posts, humans make mistakes, but it will help your own mental health a lot.

Dilectissime in Domino,
Catholics pray.
We also act in the world on behalf of the vulnerable. That’s our way.
We need not defend ourselves to the world.
We just need to do what we do, by instinct of the Holy Spirit and in obedience to Christ.

From Christ to Ghandi
Appears this truth —
St. Francis of Assisi
Proves it, too:
Goodness becomes grandeur
Surpassing might of kings.
Halos of kindness
Brighter shine
Than crowns of gold,
And brighter
Than rich diamonds
Sparkles
The simple dew
Of love.

— Langston Hughes

From the Pope - In our competitive society, where it seems that only the strong and winners deserve to live, sport also teaches us how to lose. It forces us, in learning the art of losing, to confront our fragility, our limitations and our imperfections. It is through the experience of these limits that we open our hearts to hope. Athletes who never make mistakes, who never lose, do not exist.

This applies to all sports but - and I am not joking - it is absolutely something best understood by a baseball man.
