Aye, I wonder the same thing! And I mean... at least in order to explain the genesis of religion, it appears pretty darn useful to me.

It's good to remember that failing to replicate specific assumptions does not necessarily invalidate the whole theory from which they stem—especially if the theory in question is a large framework inspiring many other hypotheses, as well. It warrants caution, sure, but not theory panics.

I'm in the same boat! Admittedly, I might just find it easy to personally relate to TMT. And sure, some claims derived from it are pretty weird (and don't seem to hold up AT ALL).

Yet, I also feel like our discipline has developed this unreasonable thirst for finding the next big theory to debunk.🥸

Although we also had a recent fun case where a fandom scholar equaled our submission on "hostile fan behaviors" among music fans with media institutions painting refugees in a bad light. So who knows 🫠

You might be onto something, Nick! Two of the four anecdotal experiences I mentioned concerned submissions in the field of Human-AI interaction. T
I mean, there's just *no* need for a young PhD student to read the sentence "Well, that's academic writing to you." in their first peer review. 🤦🏻

It's especially infuriating as they were obviously based on completely inattentive reads of our submissions. In high-impact journals.

So this is another reminder to *please* keep any narcissism and unfocused hostility in check when peer-reviewing.
And for editors to consider their role as filters 🤔

It might be mere coincidence, but:

Over the course of 8 years, I have read 100+ peer reviews, and they have almost never been unkind. Yet in the past six months, my team has now received four different reviews whose toxic language and condescending attitude should, IMHO, have been sent right back.

Based on our 12-item scale to measure attitudes towards AI (ATTARI-12), my colleagues @tgnambs.bsky.social & @markusappel.bsky.social, as well as the team over at the #SOEP have now developed a new short questionnaire to measure domain-specific AI attitudes in healthcare, education, and at work ⤵️
