The wasp mantisfly, Climaciella brunnea, is not a wasp, a mantis, or a fly. It is instead a type of spider-eating lacewing that keeps itself safe by looking like it has a painful sting, which is does not.

A wee jumping spider in Brazil's Parque Nacional das Emas, the country's least-visited national park. Overall the ecosystem is a tropical savanna called cerrado. I saw this very pretty little spider in a small patch of humid forest.

Of all my photos, this is easily my favourite I've ever taken. This amphipod is legitimately about 1mm in size. So small your eyes can't make out any details on it. They refuse to sit still. They run away from the light. It just looks like a grain of sand.

Genuinely a 1 in a million shot.
