This fish was harvested as part of research on Lake Superior looking at lake trout. Analysis of its otolith ("ear stone") revealed that is was incredibly old.

Here's a neat project completed recently thanks to funding from the American Rescue Plan Act. This boardwalk at Muskallonge Lake State Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula allows individuals of all abilities beautiful views of, and access to, Lake Superior.

POV: You're a map turtle caught in Michigan during a Lake St. Clair fish survey.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is working collaboratively with US Fish and Wildlife Services Fisheries and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to survey around the entire lake.

This is a rainbow darter, a species that likes clear, cool waters and is a great indicator of stream health. This one was caught during a Salmon in the Classroom salmon release.

Students found this darter while they were doing a survey to see what lives in the stream/river. #IdentiFriday

We caught 9 more #LakeSturgeon on Tuesday as part of our #sturgeon survey in the #StClairRiver! 4 of the fish were recaptures and 6 were juveniles. Big fish of the day was 63.7 inches and 79 lbs.

Nope, but good guess! It was a Butler's garter snake. 🐍

The answer was....Butler's garter snake! They are about the width of your pinky. The eastern garter snake is about the width of a thumb.

These snakes eat earthworms, frogs, fish and even leeches. A varied diet!
