Great Lakes water levels decline from record highs: What the forecast says The recent decline in Great Lakes water levels hasn't been especially steep, but the overall trajectory is one of increasing variability.

Over the next six months, the Army Corps predicts water levels will stay below long-term averages on all Great Lakes, except possibly Lake Ontario. planetdetroit.org/2026/03/grea...

Newts are well-known for their dark red spots outlined in black. In fact, the genus name (Notophthalmus) comes from the Greek words meaning "back" and "eye," referencing these distinctive spots. The spots are most visible in the eft stage. Photo via iNaturalist.

Learn about Michigan's salamanders in our new Extension article!

Mighty, moist, and mysterious: Meet Michigan's salamanders (Learn what the "eft" is up with the Eastern newt!)

A graphic showing a map of Lake Champlain, a map of Michigan's watersheds, and a happy anniversary message to Lake Champlain after its temporary designation as a Great Lake on March 6, 1988.

(2/2) There was serious pushback on this designation because of the lake's relative size. 18 days later, the designation was rescinded, but universities in NY and VT are still eligible for these funding channels...and we're so glad! Happy Great Lakes anniversary, Lake Champlain Sea Grant!

On this day 38 years ago, President Clinton designated Lake Champlain as the 6th U.S. Great Lake. This passed as a part of a bill that reauthorized the National Sea Grant Program and allocated specific funding for Great Lakes research. (1/2)
