More Than Music: South Africa and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra During the Cold War, the U.S. sent musicians abroad to countries where it was competing for influence.

Beautiful NPR story about recent SA tour by the UMich Symph Orchestra. It's long (45 mins) but captures the experience accurately. I am also quoted extensively at several places in ways that mostly portray me accurately. It was a moving and transformative experience to be part of this tour.

Just gave a talk to home department titled: "Language, Place and Identity in Post-Colonial Societies: Three Case Studies from Afrikaans." I feel like I have come full-circle in the last third of my career. My research has taken me back to my birth country and to the complexities of S Afr society.
