Jaws novel author Peter Benchley later wrote 'The Beast' with a similar scene. The remains of a Sperm Whale on the beach that was killed by the Giant Squid. The book ended with the squid getting defeated by a larger Sperm Whale (mother's revenge) while the TV movie opted for death by explosion.

This paper has a lot of nice data that does seem to indicate an overlooked distinctiveness, but to do taxonomic revisions without any genetic data on living species should not be a thing in 2025. Even if a species is so rare that such data is difficult to obtain it would seem better to wait.
A paper I looked at yesterday suggests the Echidna's spur/gland was similarly venomous as the platypus's in the past. As for what came first that would be difficult to determine. Perhaps the two features already existed and converged to create a more potent fighting spur.
