I’m not even talking lulu, Manfred’s got these guys dead to rights in discount-color separates from Target, Kohl’s, and, even, in the case of one particularly embarrassed mid-40s white man, Old Navy. I know, shocking. So, you wanna know who the Manfred Man is? Every single one of these gentlemen, and when the commissioner says we can’t have another year with four two-game sweeps in the Wild Card Series, well, they’re yours. article preview: It’s hard to remember after his 2023 tour de force, but once and present World Series MVP Corey Seager did not always seem like the world’s most obvious $325 million free agent signing. Qualitatively, we liked the signing at the time, but quantitatively, he’d established himself as a 3-4 WARP player—in words Fred Wilpon once used about David Wright, a very good player, not a superstar. Yet lurking underneath were major signs that Seager had this in him. Seager has always had elite bat speed and swung away at a very high amount of strikes, but since 2020 he’s run at the top of the league for in-zone swing percentage. He’s done this without developing a chase rate problem—his outside-of-zone swing percentages have remained around league-average—and he’s not just making weak contact; his exit velocities and launch angles have been ticking up as he’s swung more, not down. This is one of my favorite things to read as a comment on BP. It isn't inherently good (though @ginnysearle.bsky.social's preview IS good), but it's tied to my promotion of the site, yesterday. I want BP to be a place you get the baseball coverage you need, but also the coverage you never expected.
