The Perennial 101st Annual Gabriel García Márquez Award for Magical Realism: Ayumu Ishikawa, Twins Oosterhaut
At Baseball Prospectus, we draw much of our identifying player information directly from MLB’s databases. So when you dutifully each year sort each PECOTA sheet by player height and weight, as I and we all do, you were surely struck, as was I, by new NPB export Ishikawa’s buoyant weight, which is reflected on his MLB page as 17 pounds. If I had to guess, I’d say that Ishikawa has been affected by a curious affliction whereby he loses weight on the scale not visibly in evidence, but nevertheless with an absolute effect on his ability to influence the world around him. If we use Stephen King’s research paper Elevation as a reasonable yardstick of Ishikawa’s half-life, I’d say he’s got just about until Opening Day before he floats away entirely. If that seems cruel, just before his pending international debut, King et at. would note that “what you deserve has nothing to do with where you finish.” Ishikawa can take heart, though: “In their time of dying, everybody rises.”

this the fourth year i've done PECOTA superlatives since creating it, and every year i strive to make it stranger

Six Teams Putting the Off in Offseason | Baseball Prospectus Not everyone can be the Dodgers. But not everyone can do nothing, either.

Morning, all. Since the offseason is winding down, @ginnysearle.bsky.social, @cdgoldstein.baseballprospectus.com and I took a moment to look at which teams forgot to turn in their homework.

Also, I made up a woman named Marge who's going to die in the next eight months, and felt bad for her.

it'd be bold if the astros end up pushing into 2026 with (more or less) their current roster, or get worse like they did from 2024>25. dumb, but bold

Listen to me. We don’t have much time. Rob Manfred is the reason this is all happening. He has compromising information on the most senior executives of the Red Sox, Tigers, Cubs, and Dodgers, and he’s not afraid to use it. I’m talking like, really heinous stuff, the sort of shit these guys would just never, ever come back from. No, not crimes, obviously, way worse (meaning, more damaging to future job prospects). He’s got pictures of all these guys in off-brand athleisure. I’m not even talking lulu, Manfred’s got these guys dead to rights in discount-color separates from Target, Kohl’s, and, even, in the case of one particularly embarrassed mid-40s white man, Old Navy.

I know, shocking. So, you wanna know who the Manfred Man is? Every single one of these gentlemen, and when the commissioner says we can’t have another year with four two-game sweeps in the Wild Card Series, well, they’re yours.

[A door bangs open]

HEL-lo commissioner, how are you? Us? Oh, we were just talking about the 2025 Postseason Picture, presented by Adobe, the best way to graphically represent and understand the road to the 2025 World Series, presented by Capital One and exclusively on FOX. What a dazzling bit of success for the Wild Card Series, almost as big as the STRAUSS logos featured prominently on every batting helmet!

[Editor’s Note: This introduction was written before the Dodgers game finished last night, obviously disproving the hypothesis in the introduction. Rest assured, BP does not claim that Rob Manfred pressured teams to lose to bring balance to the new playoff format, and the fact that a five-page spread was published this morning depicting various Los Angeles executives in ill-fitting Kirkland Signature windbreakers incorrectly monogrammed with the middle initial in the center is clearly coincidental. BP asks that you respect the families of those mortified executives at this time.]

the wild card round rarely saw Game 3s, but this year there are three of them. @ginnysearle.bsky.social is on the case (and previews our ALWC G3 matchups:

I analyzed a bunch of transactions today for BP. First, I compared Gleyber Torres to a lightly salted cauliflower steak and broke down exactly how Teoscar Hernández's money is arriving and being spent. (Mad at myself at forgetting anti-deferred money in the form of silver certificates.)
