Christy — David Michôd [Review] | In Review Online A new film review of Christy, directed by David Michôd & released by Black Bear Pictures, for film review site In Review Online.

CHRISTY bombs epically; Sydney Sweeney goes off the deep end…and I’m just thinking about Boxing cinema. For InRO: CHRISTY is bad.

Love+War — Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin [Review] | In Review Online A new film review of Love+War, directed by Elizbeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin, for film review site In Review Online.

Unlike LOST IN THE JUNGLE, which I thought diminished a good story via vapid form, LOVE+WAR is brilliantly visceral, often placing us directly in the hands of famed photojournalist Lyndsey Addario, and giving just enough context to shape our experience. I think it's their best film since FREE SOLO.

In the 70s, the Uruguayan gov. banned Marcha & jailed its editors & members of a literary jury who awarded 1st prize to a story deemed "obscene and subversive" by the new regime. In solitary, FICTION published five of their stories in translation in 1976.

Mr. Scorsese — Rebecca Miller [Review] | In Review Online A new film review of Mr. Scorsese, directed by Rebecca Miller & released by Apple TV+, for film review site In Review Online.

The only complaint I have with Mr. Scorsese, a “film portrait” by Rebecca Miller, is that it is only five hours long.

Last Days — Justin Lin [Review] | In Review Online A new film review of Last Days, directed by Justin Lin & released by Vertical, for film review site In Review Online.

For InRO (In Review Online) I've reviewed "Last Days," a new film by Justin Lin, director of five Fast & Furious movies, about an American missionary making contact with the people of North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal. I found it surprisingly interesting.

Eleanor the Great Scar Jo’s first is a simple, crowd-pleasing tear-jerker

“Eleanor the Great” has a straightforward sort of heartbeat all too often lacking in today's cinemas, that recalls bittersweet dramas of old, without any presumption of importance.

Queen of Bones — Robert Budreau [Review] | In Review Online A new film review of Queen of Bones, directed by Robert Budreau & released by Falling Forward Films, for film review site In Review Online.

For In Review Online:

Review of an americana-horror oddity starring Martin Freeman and two young stars—Jacob Tremblay and Julia Butters. Not especially frightening, but not terribly memorable either.

The Threesome ‘Indie darling’ is the new mid-budget throw-away

A little drama, a lot of humor, enough heart, and the “messiness” of life. A fun mid-budget flick with the aesthetics of an indie darling.

Splitsville or, State of the Rom-Com The middle brow millenial recipe finally strikes the funny bone.

Splitsville takes a commendable crack at millennial middle brow, maybe coming close to being “Neon’s Grown Ups.” It certainly has more laughs than all these other faux indie “rom-coms.”

Ron Howard’s Survivor on “Eden,” and the rot of Western Civilization

Ron Howard is always doing something surprising. Eden is a period piece collating the Nietzschean “will to power” philosophy and the delusional romanticism of capital that led to the rise of Nazism in Germany. But it is also a drama filled survival flick.

East of Wall — Kate Beecroft [Review] | In Review Online A new film review of East of Wall, directed by Kate Beecroft & released by Sony Pictures Classics, for film review site In Review Online.

“Welcome to the new West,” in which teenage rodeo riders with undercuts listen to cloud rap and horses are sold on TikTok. EAST OF WALL is a ‘docu-drama’ that feels reminiscent of NOMADLAND. Fortunately, the drama is real, the Badlands are crumbling beneath the weight of America.

Two of the images that stay—in my own mind—are of a drifter, babbling alone above a model American small town (looking like a literal model town)—and then the brief, electric and minutely cataclysmic glide through an ominous private jet full of shadowy figures who are possibly descending on the town
