One of the hardest parts of being disabled is dealing with the ppl who are certain your illnesses are your fault. That you aren’t trying hard enough. That you failed.

That if they become disabled they will β€œovercome.”

Disability is NOT a moral failing. It happens to everyone.

The systemic issues plaguing fieldwork in remote and/or isolated locations cross fields. So much of this rings familiar and it's so frustrating that we're coming up on 10 years since the initial SAFE study about fieldwork in anthropology.

Our community survey on setting a research agenda for disability and Antarctic research is now available in multiple languages! It can be accessed (and completed) in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. Links and more info in blog post: aliceeoates.wixsite.com/alice-oates/...

Who can participate? Anyone in the Antarctic community, regardless of disability status. That means researchers of all disciplines, professional services staff, artists, tourism operators - if your work involves Antarctica, I want to hear from you!

This results in them feeling undervalued, unwanted, and wondering if the Antarctic Community is the place for them". Why am I researching disability and Antarctic science? Ableism is doing real harm to people in our community and we have a responsibility to do better in future. I'm so grateful for candid survey responses like this. Want to contribute? Here's the link: form.jotform.com/240582125006...

Very excited to introduce the community survey for my project on setting an agenda for work on disability and Antarctic research within Antarctic humanities and social sciences. Key details: open to all, 10 - 20 minutes to complete, anonymous, French, Spanish and Russian translations coming soon

15.03.2024 11:50 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You don't have to have a disability to answer this survey, but we do ask whether you do or not so that we can get an understanding of what topics are of interest to our disabled colleagues. Diagnosis, self-diagnosis, etc., all very much accepted

The survey will take approximately 10 - 20 minutes to complete dependent on reading speed and how much detail you give in response to some open-ended questions. Currently available in English but French, Spanish and Russian translations are coming soon

Making space in STEM for people with disabilities Many research labs are inaccessible to disabled scientists, but they don’t have to be

Very thankful to have the opportunity to share my experience about being a disabled scientist!

So what are we trying to do? This project will identify key research questions, with input from the Antarctic research community, to drive forward a research agenda focused on understanding experiences of disability, and dismantling barriers.

08.02.2024 16:05 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's too often assumed that disabled people are either not present in Antarctic research, or too unsafe for there to be any need for research into their experiences and barriers to inclusion. We need dedicated research to uncover barriers, biases, and the reality of disabled people's experiences.

08.02.2024 16:04 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Why this project? Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) work in the Antarctic research sector has a long way to go. While work does exist on, for example, historical and present challenges facing women in Antarctic research, there's a big gap in relation to disability.
