Will That Asteroid Strike Earth? Risk Level Rises to Highest Ever Recorded. The threat from space rock 2024 YR4 has surpassed that of Apophis, an asteroid feared by scientists 20 years ago. The danger remains low, but experts are estimating the damage that could be done.

A glimmer of hope.

Beloved Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker has died Bob Uecker, the voice of the team on the airwaves for 54 years, a Baseball Hall of Famer and local, statewide and national icon, died Thursday.

Not many celebrity deaths really get to me but Bob Uecker was special. When I was living in Milwaukee for 8 years, Ueck’s announcing could make a terrible baseball game listenable. Many weekend afternoons working outdoors or in the basement were spent listening to his stories.

Opinion | RFK Jr. Is a Vaccine Cynic, Not Skeptic. (Gift Article) My job is to ask tough questions of vaccine makers. That’s not what he is doing.

Great piece by Paul Offit

"When Mr. Kennedy says he wants vaccines to be better studied, what he really seems to be saying is he wants studies that confirm his fixed, immutable, science-resistant beliefs. That’s not skepticism."πŸ§ͺβš•οΈ

How Lagging Vaccination Could Lead to a Polio Resurgence (Gift Article) In its original form, the virus survives in just two countries. But a type linked to an oral vaccine used in other nations has already turned up in the West.

Kudos to Apoorva Mandavilli and @nytimes.com for an article that concisely describes the polio antivaxer problem while reminding older readers (and teaching younger readers) the potential cost of a polio comeback

So many sad conversations over the past couple of weeks about the future of diversity in science. If we lose programs to promote diversity, science will be worse off for it.

With all this talk about cutting the NIH, might I remind everyone that the entire NIH budget is less than 5% of the DoD budget.

The NIH is so efficient that they already rely upon volunteer labor to do grant review. And they are not even allowed to buy grant reviewers coffee.

Always a pleasure to join @kavehmd.bsky.social, especially when it's to talk shit about lying grifters who are out to destroy public health and add to their already sizable body counts.

Also, because my mood is increasingly pessimistic and miserable, I talk about H5N1 and its pandemic potential.
