I know a lot of you have already heard or read about BDS Movement's call against Microsoft, and felt weird and bad about it all, but decided to move forward as normal because of some degree of ambiguity.

"What service is Microsoft providing?"

Here it is, clear as day. A direct line to death.

I've been increasingly tempted to return to my Borges political Fantasy recently. I'm only afraid reality'll move faster than I can.

Update: nope.

It's a symptom of a movie that focussed on just throwing the tropes of an Arthurian Fantasy and a heist movie together, rather than thinking about *why* people like that idea and then bringing out the resonances between the two. The result is just a series of events, not a story.

Teaching STEM without teaching the Humanities is how you get Spider-Man villians.
Teaching Theater without teaching the Humanities is how you get Batman villians.

Teaching STEM without teaching the Humanities is how you get Spider-Man villians. Teaching Theater without teaching the Humanities is how you get Batman villians.

This made me laugh. And then I sat and thought about it. This is correct.

Walking To Aldebaran still gets plaudits from me for walking me into a brand of SF that I'd normally not go for. A great lesson in narrative voice.

And before I forget, for heavens' sakes, don't put your distracting star cameo in your pivotal character development scene. Charlie Hunman doing his grunting best of here and your audience is just wondering what the hell David Beckham's doing there.

I'm currently an hour in, and it's very pretty, but all surface and no feeling.

I'll say if it pulls it out of the fire, but this one's got a lot of work to do in less than an hour to do that.

06.08.2025 18:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The thing is, this was made in 2017, not 1990. A couple of bits of fridging, some bad dreams and a very successful life as an enforcer doesn't really excuse your protag trying to neg his way into the first prominent woman character's pants.

Sidebar: Jude Law could have really done with putting more Chaotic Bisexual sitting in this.

06.08.2025 18:05 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Maybe it's supposed to be a contrast thing. Jude Law's character is worse because he killed his wife and he magically forces people to kneel. He also makes slaves build his tower, but we don't really see the impact of his policies. We just to take it for granted he's A Bad Man who lies about all day

06.08.2025 18:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Maybe I'm missing some major society-wide anti-mage propaganda. The mages were wiped out when he was a child. But it seems like the societal unrest is more about the King antagonist as a person.

So being a dick's just Art's personality, I guess?

06.08.2025 18:00 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What else does Ritchie pull out the hat? Well, so far Art's watched his parents and his 2nd maternal figure die. That's sad.

But I'm not sure it excuses him being snide to the woman mage from the moment they meet. Being rescued could at least warrant some thanks.

06.08.2025 17:57 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

We see him brought up on the streets - but Charlie Hunman isn't a teen waif bucking the odds. He's a big burly guy extorting traders.

He defends the brothel and his ill 2nd maternal figure, but the women have zero characterisation. It looks like it's more protecting his stake in the business.

06.08.2025 17:51 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What about the mitigating factors, then? What makes him endearing, if not likeable?

Well, so far, he's lost two maternal figures, his Dad, and his kingdom. Ritchie is going all in on the sad past, combined with Art sticking it to the man.

06.08.2025 17:47 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Okay, so lesson time:

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a Guy Ritchie film, and we all know he loves a cheeky protagonist. But so far this guy just comes across as a bit of a prick, and weirdly misogynistic for someone raised in a brothel.

Labour threw trans people to the wolves, it wasn't enough. Now they are throwing people seeking asylum, refugees and new communities to the wolves, that won't be enough...

This is how fascism operates.
