Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

i’m tired of every paper (even critical ones) on societal impact of AI starting by both-siding the β€œbenefits” and risks/harms of AI

in academia, i would like us to arrive at a collective reckoning that we don’t need to play both sides. it's totally legit to clearly state just the harms. period

It’s getting to crisis level. Between hallucinated collections/items and constant scraping by AI training bots, it’s getting really bad for archives.

Know what else you can't do without a valid licence? Get on a plane, rent an apt, apply for a job, volunteer at your kids' school, any banking, ship a package at FedEx, get a library card, vote (in many states), stay in a hotel, check in at the doc office, pick up your held mail or prescriptions...

History is full of world-changing β€˜difficult’ women: Saint Mary MacKillop was a β€˜troublemaker,’ Thea Proctor was β€˜dangerously modern’, Millicent Preston Stanley - the first female member of NSW Parliament - was a β€˜battleaxe.’

Here is an illustrated map I did for our She Shapes History walking tour!

Years ago our admin did a red and black report. It took salaries & how much $ each instructor made in tuition $ for classes we taught-you were in the red or black. They released numbers once & shut it down bc humanities were producing huge $ for uni & engineers, business and scientists were losing $

All law enforcement in the town should be shunned. Don’t talk to them. Don’t let them in stores. Don’t let them speak at organisations or events.

Please read this article to the end. Even before ICE got involved, this started because this *blind man who speaks no English and uses a curtain rod as a walking stick* got lost on a walk and some Karen called the police on him and they tasered and beat him bc he didn’t drop the rod. WTF

How shed boxes became one of the most precious collections in Australia The ABC gets a rare look at the Aboriginal History Archive, a little-known collection of thousands of items collected by the well-known activist Gary Foley.

β€œGary Foley Collection tells activism history through Aboriginal lens” #archives

Please read the P.S. on the letter in the article. You will thank me.

Anthony Albanese called Grace Tame β€œdifficult” in a News Corp word game. Donald Trump was merely β€œpresident”.

Throughout history women who fight to better society get punished and labelled problems

Men who are convicted criminals and whose policies kill are more likely to get a pat on the back

Albo was asked to apply one word to various prominent people (Trump, Barnaby, Pauline etc). Grace Tame he labelled "difficult". Unconscious misogyny, which says quite a lot more than he apparently intended.

not to get too pomo but the biggest problem in the "data-driven" tendency in business and political management is that adherents treat "data" as some sort of objective object that exists independent of social or political forces. sometimes naively, sometimes cynically -- same result!

A not bad strategy is to just peter out during one of his rambles until the chamber is half empty. When you talk to the press just be like "I got really bored, he was always stupid but tonight he was super boring. Dementia maybe?" He'd be mad. Of course instead they're just kinda sittin' there.

this weekend I had a chat with [read: cornered at a bar mitzvah] a rather long-tenured AI researcher who works on Gemini, and we talked about how AI has accelerated this total breakdown in infrastructure for the cultural heritage sector. He said to me that he believes the open web is dead.

Aliya Rahman, woman who was dragged out of car by ICE in Minneapolis: "I've spent the last month learning the names of the tendons in my shoulder, because both of my shoulders are torn -- cartilage and tendons. But what I haven't learned is the names of the people who did this to me."

FYI instead of watching the SOTU, you could do those interminable workday trainings that you’re procrastinating on and feel as though you’ve *avoided* pain. Rare opportunity. Just saying.

My first proper blog post for @globalmarhist.bsky.social πŸ™ŒπŸ» This is the source I repeatedly return to when I teach others about Caribbean slavery.

There is so much that can be gleaned from this source alone. My post discusses some of the features!

I have spoken to two people now who have told me that only part of their FBI interviews are in the released files, and the parts of their interviews that are missing include mentions of Trump. 1/

I use a variation of this how I have my primary sources set up. An excel spreadsheet with metadata columns. I can use this set up online archival repositories of material. The key is to allocate unique identifiers to each collection and item.

Zotero is what I use. It is free but with the option for a paid subscription that allows you to sync both metadata AND files to an online version for anywhere access. It also has the ability to place in collections and use tags and other metadata tools to add extra info to resources.

I updated The Cage Gauge today β€” my ranked list of every Nicolas Cage movie ever made. Now at 110 films! I think I’m the only person in the world who’s seen and written about all of them. If that’s wrong and there’s somebody else out there…shame on you, weirdo.

Minneapolis isn't an especially sweary place but there are so many houses that have homemade "FUCK ICE" signs and I've had multiple conversations with parents about how we're okay with our kids using that word in this context because sometimes it IS okay to swear and this is one of those times.
