My #ScreamJam game got into the top 100 in the story category, and won (g)Host's Choice for "games that were especially innovative or unique"!
Thanks to everyone who played and voted for it, and if you've yet to play it, Halloween's the perfect time:

You see a monster smoking in the parking lot.
Investigate it, kill it, get food, think about your life, laugh, cry, drive away, or anything in between with 33 unique endings.
A cinematic horror-dramedy text adventure made for #ScreamJam 2025.

A cinematic PSX scene where a strange muscle monster is standing in a restaurant parking lot with his back to the camera. The monologue text reads: "A monster. Smoking. In the parking lot."
I have no idea what the fuck I'm improvising for #ScreamJam. Turns out it's a cinematic text adventure horror comedy???

I won't be leaving itch, and I don't wish to imply that you should leave it. It's an important platform with a wonderful community.
That said, I won't be surprised if people do leave it for better alternatives.
This might be a hot take, but I believe itch is riding off its reputation and the lack of any real alternative.
That's fine, but you have to actually keep that reputation.
Hell, there hasn't been any significant updates or fixes since *2019*.
A tweet by KenneyNL: Started keeping track of the @itchio uptime, this is getting ridiculous. I'll genuinely start promoting my Patreon store a bit more, the revenue split is better and at the very least it's up
I owe this audience to @itch.io , and I got actual job opportunities thanks to it.
I have cut the tiny dev team a lot of slack, but I agree this is getting silly. Not to mention the influx of scam and spam comments in recent months.
P.S. I apologize to the good people at Valve, who forewarned in 2007 how players never look up in first person games and must be encouraged to do so, and I scoffed at them thinking this no longer happens, only to find out this still, indeed, happens
05.09.2025 15:12 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0To be clear I'm not blaming them. It's 100% on me that the game is ambivalent about what it is, and that's something to be solved. That's why you playtest and fail fast.
What I *am* saying is that you should never make an imsim as a solodev in your fucking life
Both groups really liked the exploration loop, and had a lot of fun realizing they infiltrate in different ways.
It was great to see and hear all that, but that further confirmed their original expectation instead of what I as a designer intended.
I realized that those who expected a stealth-action game were more likely to be cautious and slow (one of them outright avoided lights), while those expecting a puzzle game were more likely to fuck around and find out but cut straight into security cams and didn't care

Playtested my first imsim level in front of a live studio audience for the first time yesterday.
The interesting thing was that the LESS experience a player had playing imsims and especially stealth games, the BETTER they actually performed

Also! I need more ways make this hill less artificial and more interesting. Any ideas outside of foliage and trees?

why don't stealth game heroes just remove security cameras?
are they stupid?
