What could possibly go wrong? Search, social media and now shopping.
Google replaces Amazon as a new middleman, gathers yet more information, influences and drives yet more user behaviour.
"The search monopoly was powerful. This could be something else entirely".

On 5th July this year, Palestine Action was proscribed after a vote in Parliament invoking the Terrorism Act 2000.
Since then, police have made over 2,700 arrests for peacefully protesting. These arrests are unlawful.
Amnesty UK has intervened in the Judicial Review in the courts.

It's ridiculous that the Government *still* haven't banned the sale of peat.
Peat bogs are still getting dug up and used for compost and in horticulture. Ministers say they'll ban it 'when time allows'.
Get on with it already! Sign the petition:

There were some incredibly powerful talks at the #NationalEmergencyBriefing today
And hearing 9 interrelated themes brought home the systemic nature of the polycrisis. Can this be the start of a societal tipping point?

We need to rewild 30% of the planet to restore nature & protect our wildlife, but Britain is falling behind. So I've signed this new petition calling on one of our biggest landowners - the Church of England - to rewild its land. Join me? you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/pr...
Great news and deserved recognition. Very much enjoying listening to the audio version read by Stephen Fry👌🏻
Establishing where we collectively draw red lines is essential to prevent unacceptable AI risks.

Something that we can all feel good about ….
To better understand & navigate the path to superintelligence & prevent the creation of uncontrolled AI, we must build trust across corporations & countries, create safety & verification mechanisms, avoid dangerous power imbalance, and ensure AI's benefits are shared globally.

“These systems are designed to be addictive, feeding people more and more extreme content, making them alternately angry and sad”
“Their silence, because they’re afraid, is their support to the genocide.” 👏👏👏
A privilege to hear in person from @timbl.bsky.social tonight in London. Both inspirational and funny! Plus solid plugging for Solid 👍🏻
"Perhaps what is most extraordinary about Berners-Lee’s career is that he never sought to own or profit from his invention".
While so many did look to profit from what he invented, TimBL instead continues to work tirelessly to build something that is for everyone.
Looking forward to speaking w @kateraworth.bsky.social at #WorldDesignCongress. We'll explore how to redesign economy for planetary & social wellbeing. I'll be launching a new paper on Public Value of Arts & Culture.

1. Out of curiosity, I went through the feeds of some habitual tuna tormentors. I found they’re big on:
- fox hunting
- Reform UK
- antagonism to asylum seekers.
In other words, the same few antisocial (psychopathic?) men, turning up in all the bad places.

The Gaza Famine is the world’s famine. A preventable, predictable famine.
Enough. Ceasefire. Open all crossings, north and south. Let us get food in, unimpeded and at massive scale.
A powerful voice and a powerful message.
Very much looking forwards to seeing TimBL in London 👍🏻. Guest appearance by @stephenfry.bsky.social perhaps??
Remarkable letter signed by former Israeli security chiefs: ‘Netanyahu is leading the nation to unprecedented defeat. Stop the futile war. Bring the hostages back at once!’ Signatories include former heads of Mossad, Shin Bet, military intelligence, chiefs of staff etc.

Former magistrate, 81, faces six months in jail for Palestine Action vigil
More than 200 people arrested for supporting Palestine Action, a group recently proscribed by the Labour government. It was the first time in her life that she had been arrested.

If the police arrest me for this, it's a direct attack on the expression of opinion: ie on free speech. But the Terrorism Act is so madly oppressive and loosely framed that I have no idea which side of it I'm on. And I suspect it's the same for them.
