Cool idea, haven’t been in years, alas I’ll be there a few weeks earlier
Working on it
A couple more cities now locked in for summer/fall: Minneapolis and Austin, and I’m open to topic ideas for those. More cities in the works for 2026, just not quite scheduled yet
New on Nebula: I went to the city that instituted the first urban growth boundary in America. It was a good idea 68 years ago, and it’s an even better one now

"Cars are the most absurd means of transport in a city. They are parked 95 per cent of the time. It takes two tonnes to move someone who weighs 70 kilogrammes. And the denser the city, the more absurd it is."
Two great transit-oriented events coming up for RPA:
1. Maulin Mehta is joining Asm. Andrew Macurdy on 3/25 for a conversation on transit in NJ
2. Tiffany-Ann Taylor is joining @nerd4cities.bsky.social and @ridersalliance.org on 4/24

I’ve been to Plaza Las Americas! Does it have mofongo-flavored cheesecake??
First bill of its kind in the US! 👏👏
Int’l code harmonization, cut out of this, was opposed by one (1) interest group: the Big Four elevator companies whose outsize profits are protected by the US’s unique code.
Let’s win the whole loaf in Oregon in 2027 & build the accessible homes we’ll need
Wow! 36 of you have already submitted written testimony in support of an Inner Eastside for All! Thank you! It is incredibly important for Council to hear why ordinary Portlanders support more homes for all our neighbors! www.portland.gov/council/docu...
Counterpoint: cleaning up after your dog is cringe centrism. Blocked
Oh yeah I have something like this on my list, I’ll check out your work!
For the 1st time in the 1st year of a presidential administration since at least 1993, under Trump 2, the Federal Transit Administration signed 0 new contracts for major transit projects, like subways or light rail.
The US is facing a crisis of rail transit investment: www.urban.org/urban-wire/r...
Tickets going fast for this one! Public sale for whatever’s left starts later this week.
I know I’ve seen a Portland bike network map timelapse somewhere. Transit is easier, I imagine just Wikipedia has the max system buildout info
Oh they’re quite aware
The number one thing that keeps me making videos instead of writing is the paralyzing fear of ending up being a topic on this podcast
One thing I feel ought to be discussed more is the fact that basically all rural and suburban places in the US are subsidized by cities. They resent cities. They insult cities. They elect politicians who abuse cities. But none of them could survive without cities.
The thing missing from most city paid parking plans is VALUE. No one wants to pay for parking! It’s true. No one wants to pay for anything!
If you pay for a meter or parking space that you had to circle the block forever to get, what was the value?
Go big or go home on this.
But I need to get to fashion valley efficiently
It was very satisfying to watch Ray delete the freeways in this video.
US transit data is out today, and Seattle's Link remains one of the fastest-growing rail systems in the nation, with ridership up 9% in the wake of the extension to Federal Way
Ridership should increase even further at the end of this month when the 1 & 2 lines are connected🧵
I will watch it later tonight…but I already have my own thoughts of course:

I don’t know if I can watch this lol
You have to hold a fuzzy lavalier in front of your face to be legit

I’ve had a few questions on this! General sale opens the morning of Wed March 11 for whatever tickets are left. Related, Hunter just added 200 more tickets to the presale batch in the last hour because they’re getting gobbled up fast
I looked at a more modest proposal like this (for the video) but then decided, eh, screw it. But you could pair something like this with a congestion pricing zone. The region has invested billions in transit, let’s get our moneys worth
There’s no shortage of professionally licensed traffic engineers who will tell you that decommissioning I-5 is impossible, but also can’t explain how Vancouver BC functions (almost too well, given housing demand) with no freeway running through the center of the city
