Bill O’Reilly Announces First Cable News Anchor Gig Since 2017 Fox News Ouster
O'Reilly demanded viewers tune in “a week from tonight” to watch him “do the whole Cuomo hour” while the host travelled to Israel.
If there was any doubt that NewsNation was positioning itself as Fox News lite - or, say, Fox News Channel from 15 years ago, when it didn't admit it was biased towards conservatives -- this seems to offer a bit more proof. https://loom.ly/sv1zIGE

Netflix Backs Out of Warner Bros. Bidding, Paramount Set to Win
In a stunning twist, the streaming giant's co-CEOs say the major studio was always a ‘nice to have’ at the right price, not a ‘must have’ at any price.
Wow. Say goodbye to independent journalism at CNN. The two Davids, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Paramount CEO David Ellison will together likely drive a stake through the heart of one of the best global news operations on TV. https://loom.ly/cbDtaPA

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, civil rights and me: How to process the death of a legend in a turbulent time?
I only met the Rev. Jackson a couple of times. But I'm still struggling to figure what his death means at a time when the fight to uphold his legacy has never felt more important.
It's taken a while. But I've finally pulled together an essay for Substack on my struggle to process the death of Jesse Jackson and what it signals, as attacks on the legacy of such civil rights leaders has never seemed more dire or effective. https://loom.ly/1v3lt3U

BAFTAs come under fire after guest with Tourette syndrome uses slur during ceremony
The BAFTAs were disrupted by an audience member with Tourette syndrome who shouted slurs at Black presenters. TV critic Eric Deggans examines the criticisms of the show's organizer and broadcaster.
Spoke on NPR's Morning Edition on terrible situation at BAFTA awards where Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan had the n-word shouted at them by a man w/Tourette syndrome; the BBC didn't initially edit it out of the broadcast. My take: BAFTAs and the BBC failed everybody. LISTEN: loom.ly/IXOwSFA

My salute to Black history at NPR: Questlove, George Clinton and more stories to remember during an important holiday
As Black History Month ends, here's a look at stories I've been privileged to cover at NPR that reveal important moments in the culture
Last year, I wrote this Substack post for Black History Month, summing up some of the great stories I did at NPR about Black culture and Black artists. Since we’re almost through the month, I figured it was worth surfacing again. READ: https://loom.ly/zHnvYlc

$6.49 million house sells in Tampa
It features 6,054 square feet of living space.
Wow. Looks like the Tampa Bay Times has started using AI to produce simple stories. I remember when the newspaper had a real estate website which downloaded data from nearby counties and could display it in an AI-written story. But I don't remember that in the actual newspaper. loom.ly/4H4o-Hk

Britain's ex-Prince Andrew is arrested on suspicion of misconduct over Epstein ties
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
I find it amazing that Epstein’s most famous buddy in the U..K. has been stripped of his titles, arrested and investigated, while his most famous buddy in America is actually running the country. Sigh. https://loom.ly/44Q9tNs

Column | We knew ‘America’s Next Top Model’ was cruel. We watched it anyway.
“Reality Check” is the latest documentary exposing how popular culture failed women 20 years ago. What made Tyra Banks’s “Top Model” acceptable entertainment?
Stories like this always stick in my craw. Because I have been writing and speaking out on the destructive manipulation of reality TV since Survivor debuted back in 2000. Some of us always knew how problematic America's Next Top Model was and tried to get people to stop watching it: wapo.st/3MwruPc

Exclusive | Anderson Cooper decided not to renew ‘60 Minutes’ contract at last minute — flooring execs: sources
“They must be pissed.”
I sat in the audience at the Poynter Institute’s Bowtie Ball fundraiser in 2023 when Anderson Cooper donated $50,000 to help support quality journalism. I would have been amazed if he agreed to work for Bari Weiss, given what she’s done to the journalists at CBS News already. loom.ly/sk7bySY

Just because they might be able to offer programming that might satisfy the FCC doesn't mean they wanted to deal with the possibility of crossing the agency. Especially since some of them weren't sure a syndicated radio show from New York would be popular with their listeners, anyway.

In my book, Race-Baiter, i interviewed ex-Clear Channel Radio executives responsible for the rise of Rush Limbaugh who told me that the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine was part of the environment which encouraged station owners to take his syndicated radio show and feature it on their AM stations.

The FCC, CBS and Colbert: A few things to ponder after the latest corporate capitulation
Sure, Paramount got approval for its merger with Skydance last year. But is the new company even getting much these days for all its efforts to appease the Trump administration?
Stephen Colbert’s relationship w/CBS may be fraying as he spoke out on the network’s statement disputing his explanation why an interview w/James Talarico landed on YouTube. “They know damn well that every word of my script last night was approved by CBS’ lawyers.” READ: https://loom.ly/2tVbC-U

Had more than a few thoughts on Substack about Stephen Colbert's tussle w/CBS and the FCC, including the notion that a real media company might actually challenge any unfair federal oversight or punishment in court to preserve its editorial freedom, instead of obeying in advance. loom.ly/9_u_JJA
