A large part of the respect for trams comes from the ‘Bells of Shame’. Oh boy! I have seen cars try passing an open tram door and get an earful -bells and loud speakers from driver, yelled at by pedestrians and tram passengers alike.

However life is different beyond the tram lines, it’s probably comparable to USA and Canada in terms of car dependency. The lower density,existing car infrastructure and resultant car culture means we will face similar problems and objections to shifting to mass transit.

I live in Windsor/ St Kilda neighbourhood and can confirm, it’s great. I know people in my neighbourhood just by living here and it’s wonderful to drop in on shops/cinema/pub on the way home at night. Great green spaces too.
