Absolutely, and overall I think the whole section on SEND is quite limited. However, it is another step in the right direction and will hopefully encourage schools to engage further with CPD in this area if they are more aware of the impact of language disorders on curriculum subjects.

The Writing Framework is out and I’m pleased to see the focus on oral composition of sentences and vocabulary. However, the best bit is the paragraph about Developmental Language Disorder & its impact on writing on pg. 81!

Children with speech issues risk poor mental health, charity says Speech and Language UK says some children can struggle to categorise and communicate how they feel.

Great to see the link between language and mental health considered on the BBC - and amazing of Siouxsie to share her experiences www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We have video guides for mental health practitioners about language problems and mental health - see below!

Clear message today from @amandafiner.bsky.social - chn & YP need more TIME to process and express their views & we need to really listen. The questions make me think of the phrase β€œevery interaction is an intervention” - can’t underestimate the power of listening and talking #DevLangDis #NAPLIC25

Abraz’s story was amazing. Wish staff in every PRU could hear about his journey - an area that desperately needs more awareness and understanding of #DevLangDis

Great talk Amy. Oracy really is coming up a lot in schools and any universal approaches that can include & support chn with DLD as well should be encouraged!

Abraz Hussein, an adult with DLD tells his story. He got through primary without much support, but at start of secondary was permanently excluded. Then went to PRU before getting diagnosed and going to a special school for speech and language. Support makes all the difference!

Yes I believe so, at least to some degree. Speech, language and communication needs don’t just disappear over a 6 week holiday between Year 6 and Year 7 (as the data might suggest!) but they can start to present in different ways, which could be interpreted as SEMH needs, when the needs are not met.

Not surprised by the reduction in SLCN RPs but seems counter productive when speech, language & communication needs are increasing and we know chn with SLCN struggle academically at school. RPs provide knowledgeable staff and usually more frequent access to speech and language therapy.

Great work, such a good way to encourage more SaLTs! I did my undergrad at Bath and studied lots of the psychology modules, which was a great basis for Speech and Language Therapy! During my placement year in my 3rd year at Bath I found out about SaLT and decided it was what I wanted to do πŸ™‚
