They probably read 'The Business' and thought 'amateurs, you don't need to buy a principality to own a country, you can just pay to make someone a king'.

After the National Guard shot the Kent State protestors a Gallup poll showed 58% of those questioned blamed the students.

Although Dyke did offer to resign he withdrew that offer and was instead sacked by the governors. After which he unsuccessfully demanded his job back.

Imagine removing a TV presenter from television because the regime doesn't approve of what they are saying. Crazy stuff happening ... over there.

I'll throw in Oleanna which was staged in '92.

There's also the notion that Brody commits a sin by allowing himself to be cajoled into going along with what he knows is a lie and is responsible (symbolically at least) for the subsequent shark attacks. He is figuratively speaking the final guy.

Eventually they'll throw out something to dismiss it like the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic or Zimbabwe and retreat back to the old neoliberal model.

This is pure speculation but I think it's part of a model that's so deeply imbeded in people's psyches that it feels natural like the orientation of a map where north is up. So even though you can get them to agree on specific points that don't match the model they're not comfortable with it.

Since we left the EU and Covid hit 'the Ways and Means' account has been reopened where gilts are not offered to the markets but are instead automatically purchased by the BoE. Currently it isn't really used.

Most of this is an anachronism though, the government could just directly create money.

03.09.2025 16:17 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

No. I think that's pretty much it. If the markets don't want to buy government bonds the Bank of England steps in and buys them. Currently they own about a quarter of all issued gilts. For comparison the Bank of Japan holds over half of all Japanese government bonds.

The Tories and the media worked hard to lay the blame on Labour overspending. I don't remember ever hearing a clear explanation from the BBC as to the causes of the crash. Ask people now and I'd bet the overspending explanation would be the most prevalent reason given.

Just as news employees recognised the tacit green light when BBC News publicly disagreed with the BBC Trust who upheld the complaint against Laura Kuenssberg and her misleading report on Corbyn and shoot to kill policies. After which, coincidentally, the Trust were dissolved.

I'm sure the BBC's non-white employees got the message loud and clear when they rebuked Naga Munchetty and not Dan Walker over comments about Trump's racism. For some reason the executive complaints unit investigation didn't focus on him.

At least Gordon Brown had the excuse of being constrained by the Stability and Growth Pact's national debt limit set at 60% of GDP. The jolly wheeze of PFIs was that they weren't counted as part of government debt. Though he and Blair /were/ the ones who signed up to it in the first place.

The outcome of a series of policy choices based on fantasy economics: Gordon Brown's 'light touch' financial regulation, Blair/Brown signing up to the Stability and Growth Pact, Cameron/Osborne complying with the Excessive Debt mechanism through austerity. And still the neoliberal train rumbles on.

Wait ... wait a minute ... this, this can't all be the unintended consequence of what they thought was a jolly ruse, that they coud provoke Corbyn to publicly support PA and get to prosecute him as a terrorist.

It can't be that stupid.

I'd go with the more general idea that the media is not your friend. They are not on your side; they don't have your best interests at heart. You are their mark.

Here's a fun game (for certain low values of fun) name a British film actor aged in their early forties or below and then look them up on Wikipedia. The first person to pick one who didn't go to a private(public)/independent school, wins.

Labour really marching back to the 80s with trickle down economics, Big Bang 2.0, Section 28 and now reintroducing Sus laws. Good thing nothing bad happened as a result.

Section of comic panel showing Captain Carter, hair blowing dramatically behind her in front of a glowing door/portal, holding up her Captain America style shield with an incorrectly drawn Union Jack at its centre. Her speech ballon says 'Gambit wanted to make a dramatic entrance.'

Is there any way the shield can be oriented to display the Union Jack correctly? Seems like a weird reference failure to have flipped the flag.
