Quite. Most people, not unreasonably, fundamentally donโt get the size of the sums involved in public spending and that blind spot distorts every conversation - not to mention feeding the endless stories about how MPs or council bosses are paid too much.

Itโs very noticeable already with the wealth tax crowding out discussion of alternative/better progressive tax reforms. A lot of left people I know have bought into his idea that any criticism is a reflexive defensive of the wealthy.

To state the obvious itโs bleak that his approach to politics seems to have been quite effective so far. Short of being a coalition partner some day, I donโt see how the Greens will ever be in a position of responsibility where theyโll have to face up the promises they made.

If we canโt even talk in general terms about MPsโ workload- which MPs of all parties agree is v casework- heavy and getting heavier- without a lot of responses being to assume that MPs are not telling the truth/just whinging/ working on the wrong things etc- then I think weโre in a bad place

They really think 2015-2019 was an interregnum in which no-one in particular held any power and the only meaningful political event was the referendum.

British Politics' Midlife Crisis
Why British Parties Can't Make Peace with Their Actual Voters
On the morning of Keir Starmer's conference speech here's a new post on an odd psychopathology in British politics - our main parties don't like the people who vote for them - the dreaded Professional Managerial Class. And so they are acting out like a divorced dad seeking cooler voters. 1/n

I mean the challenge here is that we have voters who want great public goods and also want to pay no taxes

I think the deeply rotten internal culture of Labour is an underrated factor that drives so many of its dynamics and anyone whoโs in a position to understand *how* rotten thinks itโs normal

honestly one of my firmer beliefs is a lowkey hostility to hyperlocalism, because it almost always end up with governing institutions dominated by a fixed, renting and transgressive majority that is extremely difficult to break up

I think a lot of people - myself included - severely overestimated the old rightโs instinct for self-preservation. I didnโt expect them to make smart political choices out of the goodness of their hearts, but I really thought electoralism might get them there.

Wanting high growth and low immigration without seeing any tension between those goals is the epitome of the elite centre rightโs decline

The fundamental ethos of liberalism is not to act without judgement. The fundamental ethos of liberalism is that our judgements shouldn't constrain the life and freedom of others.

Actually jaw dropping from James McMurdock MP, even by his standards. We cannot become numb to this.
The far right are in Parliament, and they're trying to normalise outright, vicious racism (same goes for the likes of Rupert Lowe too)

Event Horizon is brilliant at misdirecting the audience about what kind of film it will be and what we should make of the characters, but I have no idea to what extent that was really intentional vs a fortunate byproduct of studio cuts

Event Horizonโs horror is so effective because so little is revealed about its origins or intent, more exposition or a longer run time would have detracted from that imo
