Did you know that the headquarters for one of the big 4 US railroads is just a short walk from Georgia Tech?

Norfolk Southern hosted our MS in Supply Chain Engineering students for a tour of their Network Operations Center and gave us an overview of modern freight railroads!

In logistics, perhaps the most important idea is that inflows must balance outflows.

If $ consistently flow out of a nation without growing inflation, ask yourself: where did those $ come from?

A frustration about grant "overhead": shocking rates!! Grant funding F = D + I, where D are directs. I is computed (rate)*D_elg, and eligible directs D_elg < D. So, a rate of 50% seems very high (half of grant!) Nope. Ex: D=100, D_elg=80, so I=40 and F=140. So indirect is (40/100)=28.5% of grant.

Tariffs seek to raise prices on produced metals so US producers are competitive. Demand for steel-intensive items should go down, and some products (like cars/trucks) may be redesigned to use less. An overall economic drag and fewer large vehicle sales will reduce carbon emissions, yay! #logistics

Trade tariffs create supply chain costs, and new costs distort SCs and markets. Tariff-engineered distortions may have political goals, including raising revenue. But why is "reducing a trade deficit" a goal, when a deficit means net foreign investment which seems preferable to the alternative!

Alan Erera on LinkedIn: Tariffs and Trade There is continued discussion in Congress of new trade tariffs on US goods imports in the range of 10-25%, possibly independent of country-of-origin but in anyโ€ฆ

Tariffs are a supply chain cost. Impacts seem difficult to predict, but experiments is coming with outcomes that could be compared to models. Are we ready? #logistics

Here's the modern logic: students don't have watches, only mobile phones, but instructors restrict mobile phone use during exams, thus we project the ticking clock!

Why 2023 was the year of the e-bike and not the self-driving car E-bikes and self-driving cars both entered the year with momentum. Only one maintained it.

In terms of mobility, e-bikes are selling faster & having bigger effects on emissions than EVs, much less self-driving EVs. And yet they get vastly, vastly less attention.

Thanks for sharing. I think a MARTA network with higher frequencies and less coverage is sensible given present budget realities. I haven't studied ridership, but the eye test on low-frequency routes around my neighborhood reveals very few riders...
