Meet our visiting Grad Student Ecem!

She is Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience at the University of Würzburg, studying attentional and learning processes in fear conditioning. At VAL, she focuses on visual foraging under threat, manipulating the spatial distribution of threat and value of targets.

Sadly learned of the passing of Prof. Margaret Boden, an inspiring thinker.

Grateful I had the chance to listen to her talk 7 years ago at the "2018 Religion & Science Conference: AI & Consciousness", organized by Cambridge Muslim College.

2/ Today, I’ll be giving a talk there as a PhD student. It means a lot to return to the place where my curiosity for science truly began. I’m grateful to my former supervisor, @mattlongo.bsky.social not only for the kind invitation and for staying in touch all these years, but also for his guidance.

1/ Exactly 9 years ago, I did my very first international lab internship as a curious, naive undergraduate student at Body Representation Lab @birkbeckpsychology.bsky.social. It was my very first hands-on research experience and one of the reasons I chose to pursue an academic path.

I read a really old article on broad and narrow attention by Wachtel (1967), and I found this sentence deeply relatable "...the extremely anxious individual becomes a slave to minor variations in the perceptual field, which demand most of his attention and leave him confused and disorganized."
