Exactly. AI can describe, but can't analyse. (Even if it could at some point, it wouldn't be the work or perspective of the student). AI does have some potential benefits, but as a writing tool, it defeats the object of the purpose of academic writing in the humanities. Key word - HUMANities.
The whole point of a PhD (& other scholarship/UG studies) is to do the reading and writing yourself in order to become an expert in a particular area. It's not to look like you are - you actually have to be one! Otherwise, the AI-produced 'scholar' has no expertise and wouldn't be able to function.
π§΅Three years ago I wrote a short piece Twelve good men (and women!) and true: a very brief history of trial by jury. I started it
"Some things in life are rightly considered sacrosanct, such as the right to education and to work. One such right is the right to trial by jury. In the last few 1/5
Very much looking forward to delivering a talk this afternoon on mental health and Higher Education, using myself as a case study! Hopefully it'll be of interest, but we'll see! The event is full, so no more places, assuming everyone comes along! Again, we'll see!
Also, I'll be one of the ones staying up for the result! It'll be an interesting one, regardless of the outcome, in part because of the interpretations of what the result means for the state of British politics in general, & for the state of the parties, & possible attempts to project a GE meaning.
Lovely that TWO articles in the Global Discourse #rhetoric special edition are on the 'most-read' list! The first is by Pete Dorey on the discourses of the populist right, and the second is by Steven Kettell & Peter Kerr on Boris Johnson's evidence to the COVID inquiry! Great to see! Links below.
The result of #GortonAndDenton may well be tight, so recounts could be possible. Prepare for a long night if you're staying up to see if #ReformUK take the seat from #Labour. As ever, no predictions! Source: www.opinium.com/resource-cen...
Each sentence is delivered using the same inflection! Very little time given to audiences to hear a message as the points are buried after delivery by the next. It's not a style used by effective oratory, which connect emotional arguments in a persuasive way.
Am I the only one who doesn't get on with Multiple Choice Questionnaires as exams?! Since High School, they've never really settled well in my head! Having to take them (or worse, draft them!) is close to my definition of hell. I appreciate they have benefits, but for me, I'd rather do a viva(!)
Mandelson to resign from the Lords on Wednesday, with the govt preparing legislation to remove his peerage. A life of scandalous service ending with a police investigation concerning allegations of sharing v sensitive info with #Epstein in 2009. A catalogue of disgrace. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Even a year ago, Mandelson resigning from The Labour Party would be unthinkable. Now it seems unavoidable. His career has been littered with resignations surrounded by scandal. It was inevitable it'd end like this.

Very enjoyable lecture on British Foreign Policy for #POLI263 this afternoon, covering the challenges and opportunities of the postwar period. Shame the tech didn't allow me to record it!
Very happy with the excellent student feedback on my modules for semester one! #POLI101 (British Politics) and #POLI252 (PolComm) were both highly praised for being intellectually important with stimulating seminars! Each are delivered with great passionate teaching. Absolutely delighted.
Taken the morning of my viva... 15 years ago! Where did that time go?!
Sad news - Rest in Peace - Peter Marcus Kristensen has passed away at the tragically young age of 42. Read his obituary from the University of Copenhagen here: politicalscience.ku.dk/about/news/2...
Wasn't there an inquiry into Blair's complicity in America's decision to go to war in Iraq, killing hundreds of thousands on a known false premise? Sure, he'll bring peace.
Details of the funding opportunities can be found here - deadline: February 2nd 2026: www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DPH631/e...
