Election riots have history - here's an example from Huddersfield, where "disgraceful riots" were triggered after the sitting MP fell out of a window and died. Also Merry #Christmas(!) (Although this was well before the Christmas season we recognise emerged).

My first office was in Roxby, with a great view of the city. The second office is in Abercromby Sq, which has a fantastic view of the square. The Cyprus Building regenerated into a fancy new venue with a lovely cafe and events space! It's great to be at a growing University & wonderful dept.

The chapter summarises themes and topics from this book (edited by @drdavidjeffery.bsky.social and I) on May's statecraft, her political skills, and her policy records. The book has over 20 original chapters from a wide range of academic experts. Give it a read! link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

May. Could. Might. The reality is #Brexit existed and the Parliamentary arithmetic (of her own making after 2017) locked her into an unwinnable position in the Commons re passing the WA. Thus, no matter her positions on #MentalHealth/#ForeignPolicy/#RaceRelations... Brexit dominates her record.

24.07.2025 16:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Take #Brexit out of the equation, and she *may* well have been a successful Prime Minister. Mayism *could* have been as transformative for the Conservatives as Thatcherism. Indeed, give her Thatcher's Parliamentary arithmetic and she *might* well be starting her third term by now.

This upcoming chapter covers Theresa May's time in David Cameron's Cabinet; an overview of the #Brexit ref that led to her becoming PM; and an assessment of her priorities in govt and how she managed them. Ultimately, despite any wins she secured, it was Brexit that textured her legacy of failure.

Great comments from the Chair of the @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social, Prof Rose Gann and Prof John Craig on how the annual #PSA25 conference also brings scholars together to talk about the big issues in political studies, of which there are many in British, European, US, & Global Politics!

We're also delighted to see the Founding Fellows featured, including @livunipol.bsky.social's own @jontonge.bsky.social and the key point from Prof Fiona Mackay that the study of politics is for all, not just for the elite institutions!

If we could evenly reduce the Earths population whilst the terraforming of planets takes place over a number of years then it could be possible without excessive energy use. In time, though populations would grow again as people are born, but Earth will have recovered. Long way off, mind.

14.07.2025 14:09 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Exactly. I think (could be wrong) that the asteroid belt contains many of the same minerals found on Earth. If we could mine it, then we'd reduce environmental impacts on Earth and other planets. I don't envision billions leaving Earth at once, rather it'd be a slow process. But I take the point.

Call for Papers! The PSA Conservativism Specialist Group is seeking abstracts for an upcoming workshop at Hull. Details below!

14.07.2025 14:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

By reducing the Earths population by spreading out, the environment here recovers, whilst populations on new planets will be low enough to how a minimal impact. Plus resources could be brought back without extracting them on Earth. As for the economic system... well, it'd adapt as humanity changes.

14.07.2025 13:45 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'd not call it nuts, although I realise it's likely not to be an option for a few decades yet. But the aim would not be to ruin another planet as populations would be spread out.

14.07.2025 13:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Earth, though will always be our home! But the solution to environmental damage is to lower the population by going out into space.

People saying 'there is no Planet B' forget the galaxy is filled with planets, many of which we've yet to discover. Even in our solar system, technically Venus is our twin! Europa has an ocean, and the exo-systems contain Earth-like planets. Not to mention the asteroid belt is rich with resources.

Although brief, the Truss premiership was very impactful on what followed! Her election also tells us something about the ideological desires of the Cons. Plus, more generally, it shows the importance of effective leadership, and what can happen if a leader doesn't inspire confidence. Lots to say!
