7/ Despite higher spending, people wait longer than ever for medical consultations. Today, 43,000 Quebecers are waiting past medically acceptable delays to consult an orthopedic surgeon. If they're lucky to get that consultation, they then have to wait longer for their surgery.

This flight from the public to private systems by doctors in Quebec comes as government finances have never been as much under pressure as they are today. Spending on health care and social services this fiscal year is set at $65.5 billion, up from $63.6 billion last year.6/

5/ In addition to family doctors pulling out of medicare, 54 anesthesiologists have opted out of the public system, followed by 49 dermatologists, 39 orthopedic surgeons, 24 plastic surgeons, 21 obstetrician-gynecologists and 14 urologists. Even two ER docs have gone private.

4/ Meanwhile, 637,000 Quebecers have been waiting for years to register with a family doctor in the public network. But if people are willing to pay a $1,500 annual membership at a private-for-profit clinic in Montreal, they can get an appointment tomorrow with a family doctor.

3/ In total, 834 doctors have withdrawn from medicare in Quebec — the highest it's ever been. That compares with fewer than 20 who have done so in the whole of the rest of Canada. The bulk of physicians quitting the public system are family physicians.

2/ Santé Québec was actually given the power to let doctors opt out of medicare. Supporters of medicare are truly dismayed that the new Crown corporation that is in charge of health care in the province has let so many doctors go fully private in so short a period.
