a single bird, a summer song

Tiny creek lined in bee balm, yellow coneflowers, and lots of other vivid vegetation.

It's a small thing but such a relief too: after a few years of drought, it's finally not this summer. Minnows are darting in the creek and the bee balm and yellow coneflowers are blooming in profusion.

Footsteps in the semi-dark. Smooth skin on water. Swift waves on silver sands singing in a voice too low about a time that is not mine and I hold this moment like a poem in my hands.

Summer’s end. Carried on the gentlest landward breeze: the delicate, sweet scent of cornflowers in the wildflower meadow. The dry, smoky poppy and the subtle aromatic scent of weld mingled with the honeyed dustiness of blooming beach grasses – pure, fragile summer.
