What might make a difference is that this is February. Our worst southerly storms are usually in winter, so to get this sort of wind combined with rain you can only get with summer subtropical moisture might be a much rarer event.

The 240km/h was from Cape Turnagain, which is closer to Hawkes Bay than Wellington, a records above 200km/h fairly regularly. But readings closer to Wellington show that it was certainly a pretty extreme event.
