Jane Fonda, other stars, revive the Committee for the First Amendment β a group that emerged when the anti-communist panic came for Hollywood
Even after the original group fizzled, many of its members were able to keep making films with progressive messages.
In 1947, some Hollywood stars including Henry Fonda stood up to anti-communist witch hunts.
Now, Jane Fonda and artists like Viola Davis, Pedro Pascal and Billie Eilish are reviving their organization β the Committee for the First Amendment β to defend free speech again.

1991. And, last but not least, students protest the Gulf War, taking to the streets around campus and Squirrel Hill alongside Pitt and Duquesne students.
In short, anyone who says protest at CMU has only looked one way or never happened at all, is a liar. 7/7

Output of New Titles by Press (2012 - 2024) figure. Shows trend over time for University of Chicago Press, Princeton University Press, and Harvard University Press. Early on Chicago publishes the nether number around 140 while Princeton and Harvard were both near 100. But, over time, Chicago and Princeton have pulled away from Harvard so that by last year they publish around 128 while Harvard is publishing only 26.
Y'all know I love publishing industry mess and The Crimson is delivering today! I had no idea Harvard University Press was publishing so little.

This has been a discussion among many of us for years now. Funding for Humanities was already grossly inadequate; we never had anything to compare to the NSF and NIH. We had a little from NEH, a little from ACLS, but most of us were producing our scholarship with next to no resources. 1/2

For folks who donβt know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.
