At a social studies teacher conference years ago I asked Jim Lehrer of the NewsHour what a journalist should do if he knows the interviewee is lying. Lehrer said he trusted the listener to sort truth from lies. I think that doesn't work in the current information ecology.

Example of Quisling Journalism: Mike Johnson was lying when he said we needed to spend whatever it takes to deport immigrants to limit a crime wave. There is no immigrant crime wave. Mike Johnson knew it. The journalist shouldn't have let that lie go unchallenged.

Quisling Journalism: acting as if the load of horseshit a public servant is dishing out isn't a load of horseshit when you know it, the liar knows it, and any sentient listener knows it. Good journalism would call it out immediately, every time. Silence is violence.
