One thing I will say abt Emma Hayes as USWNT manager is one of her weak points, which is prob tied to her background as a club manager, is understanding the idea that the team represents the United States and there are implications to that beyond things on the field or within the group of players

Just had someone use one of my photos from a vigil for Renee Good to claim my church was violating the separation of church and state demanded by its non-profit status because... one of the people attending was wearing a DSA shirt.

I am profoundly exhausted at the lack of civic education today.

Who will do this from the NWSL?

Used to, a total lack of comment by any currently rostered USWNT player is pretty devastating.

We silently held up ABOLISH ICE signs during the anthem, and security came to our seats and said if we didn't hand them over they would have LASD remove us from the game. I asked if it was the stadium rules, and security said it was the team's decision. So there's that.

It’s tough to tune in to the USWNT game today knowing this generation of players isn’t the type to make a united statement against the fascist violence we’re seeing in MN & all across the US. It’s just sad knowing that a lot of us used to feel a strong connection to the WNT bc of its brave activism.

This would be a great time for the USWNT players to pick up the mantle of Pinoe and Becky and Press and start some form of protest again. An arm band, a kneel, anything. Defend the country you represent.

This camp is young and increasingly apolitical, I'm bracing for disappointment with many of the current "leaders" even missing.

Now is the time for a new generation of leaders to face the test of whether they carry the torch of standing up for what's right under that banner.

ICE isn’t an aberration, but the product of the militarized police state the US built at home and abroad. The shooting of an unarmed man isn’t new, just how brazenly this violence is carried out. Fight ICE, but to truly protect our communities, we must dismantle the system that made it possible.

I sent this around to folks who have Ring when this story broke but something just crossed my mind:
Portland Thorns’ main kit sponsor (like, on the front for all to see) is Ring. Given PDX’s robust history of telling the feds to fuck off, have Thorns supporters brought this up to their FO?

And they're undercutting their normal STH rates, therefore undercutting the independent SG.

We stand with the NWSLPA in its opposition to the High Impact Player (HIP) rule and urge the NWSL to negotiate with the Players Union as required by the collective bargaining agreement.  The criteria for HIP status put forth by the league are arbitrary and unjust, largely leaving the earning potential of NWSL players in the hands of media members. Moreover, the HIP rule creates two tiers of players, will impact USWNT player development, and does not account for international player success.  We condemn the NWSL’s persistent attempts to interfere with fair pay, and we call on all fans to show the league that we stand with the players:      •    Block the NWSL on all social media platforms     •    Boycott of merchandise from the NWSL shop     •    Email your team and the league that you are opposed to the HIP rule and the league’s refusal to bargain with the NWSLPA
