What part of town is this in?

Parts of East Colfax, Denver CO are being renovated for new bus lanes. While this will take awhile to complete, it was quite interesting to suddenly see in the ripped up street the remains of the old streetcar tracks that used to run down the center of Colfax, paved over & forgotten in the 1950s.

Hallmark needs to start an urban planning and transportation engineering consulting company.

Every one of their movie extolls the virtues of walkable, bikable, mixed-use neighbourhoods with lots of third spaces for casual social interactions.

Denver wants to get rid of minimum parking requirements for all new development Colorado wants cities to reduce their use of parking minimums. Denver could go even further.

Good to see this in play for Denver. Costly parking mandates are ending on July 1, 2025, around β€œtransit centers” but this proposal ends the mandates across the city. I’m hoping my town (Littleton) does the same soon. Or better: State legislation ending them across CO. denverite.com/2024/12/09/d...

confine myself to a car because I'm afraid of the harm that cars can cause. Just like the parent who doesn't let their child walk to school because of traffic and so becomes part of that traffic, nothing changes if we aren't willing to make the change. So I'm going to keep on riding.

I'm physically okay, but really shaken up. Since then, biking has been a very stressful part of my day instead of the emotional outlet it usually is. I've had many close calls before, but never impact. I'm not sure how long this trauma is going to viscerally affect me, but I know that I can't...

πŸš²πŸ™οΈ April Transportation tracking update🧡: Trips in a car made up only 25% of the miles I traveled! Mostly because I drove less, but also because I traveled 70 miles further by other modes. In other news, a driver failed to yield while pulling out of a driveway and I went over their hood on 4/27...

πŸš²πŸ™οΈ I got a flat tire yesterday on one of Denver's few neighborhood streets with an active ped sidewalk. Almost immediately two men playing basketball in a side lot asked how far I was from home and offered to drive me. They rearranged some stuff in their trunk and one stayed behind to make room.

I expect to drive less to mountains and bike more in the city. Looking at the accumulation charts and observing the shift in mode share from last month, I believe that the Car-Multimodal gap will close in the next two months. Won't be upset if it doesn't pan out, but that's how I see the data moving

I am immensely proud of this feat! I traveled to the mountains three times this month, commuted by car once🀒, and got two Ubers on a night out. I completed every other trip by some other mode! YTD I am running a 60/40 (car/multimodal) split, but as the ski season slows and the weather gets warmer...

πŸš²πŸ™οΈ March Transportation Tracking Update🧡: I biked 7 miles further than I drove this month! I realized how close I was 3 days ago and rode 48 miles recreationally in addition to 40 miles commuting and for social events to achieve this goal. With 2 days left in March, I am 32 miles away from traveling further by bike/walk/transit than by car. My commute alone is going to reach that mark, but I'm riding to Chatfield with a friend tomorrow so I'm going to far surpass that goal!

Nobody Told EV Owners How Quickly They Burn Through Tires It looks like a case of adoption leapfrogging education.

Rapid tire wear isn't just a problem for EV owners.

Tire particles end up in waterways, where they kill fish. And we don't know how they affect human health when we breathe them in.

The problem only exists b/c so many EVs are bloated and overpowered.

With the pickup at a halt, I proceed through the intersection while they lean into the horn. One block later, in a bike lane, I'm left thinking how the lack of a truly connected bike/ped network puts my life in danger. My choice to avoid a hill seemed rational, but seven blocks almost killed me.

Risked my life for no reason but spite. As drivers merged and came to a red light, I filtered through on the right. When the light turned green, a pickup passed me so close, my left shoulder closed their mirror, just to stop 20 feet later attempting to make a right turn. 🧡2/3

CW: traffic violence. πŸš«πŸ›» I made the decision to avoid a hill while biking home last night and instead ride 14th-7th on Broadway, where the new bike lane starts. Normally I stay in the bus lane, but construction narrowed the road from four lanes to two. That's when a #drivernotcar with #carbrain 🧡

πŸš²πŸ™οΈI love the pro-social nature of biking. Ran into a friend running on the Cherry Creek trail on my commute today. I had to keep moving, but our short conversation brightened my morning. Austerity politics will not succeed in addressing the unsustainable nature of our transportation system. Convenient and affordable alternatives to driving, both locally and regionally, are the only things that can do that. Thanks for listening end of rant. Here's the YTD raw data (forgot it earlier)

Instead, I am satisfied to have replaced almost every trip under 15 miles by a combination of walking, biking, buses, and trains. Sure, I could not recreate in the mountains of do so less often but part of the reason I'm doing this is to see what behavior changes are reasonable to ask of others.

If you scrolled this far, I hope you found it even the tiniest bit interesting. I love how this activity has confronted me with the realities of my transportation habits. I am nowhere close to traveling a majority of miles by non-car modes and I don't think I should set that goal for myself anymore.
