Historic manioc genomes illuminate maintenance of diversity under long-lived clonal cultivation Maniocβ€”also called cassava and yucaβ€”is among the world’s most important crops, originating in South America in the early Holocene. Domestication for its starchy roots involved a near-total shift from ...

Incredible new research in #Science about the genomic landscape of #manioc (casava, yuca) and Indigenous cultivation & selection: kinship maintained over long distances, high genetic diversity, a continental gene pool shaped and maintained by people over millennia.

National Science Foundation freezes grant review in response to Trump executive orders The National Science Foundation has canceled all grant review panels this week. It's unclear how long the pause could last.

NSF review panels cancelled at the last minute today. Devastating for colleagues in US and makes me question what a Polievre govt would do to Tri-Council

A still from the Tom Thomson Centennial Swim in which I swam the length of Canoe Lake on the centenary of Tom Thomson’s death. I was accompanied by a brass ensemble in canoes and a synchronized swimming squad who met up with me at several points along the swim. #contemporaryart #art #videoart

Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra)

Currently off-vibing, nursing a throat virus with two epic plant people: marshmallow (wow!) and black elderberry (damn!).

Health products aren't regulated in Canada, so if you can find these from a local harvester you'll know you're in for some serious healing powers.

The 12,000-Year-Old Wolves That Ate Like Dogs Animal remains unearthed in Alaska give clues to how wolves were domesticated.

'To the Dene people, who've lived in Alaska & NW Canada for centuries, debate over canine origins is in danger of missing a bigger point.
β€œThe idea of dogs is a very specific, modern, Western concept,”...For Indigenous ppl, dogs functioned as partners in survival, allies on a harsh landscape.' 🏺πŸ§ͺπŸΊπŸ•

β€œβ€¦any numerical probability…is not an objective property of the world, but a construction based on personal or collective judgements &(often doubtful) assumptions… , it is not even estimating some underlying β€˜true’ quantity. Probability, indeed, can only rarely be said to β€˜exist’ at all” πŸ§ͺ

It might be a trick question. Once humans are considered components of a system (e.g., forest gardens, fire-adapted grasslands, etc.) than most folks are behooved to call it natural. But yah, Indigenous peoples are keystones for many systems, today and in the pat.
