Over the course of developing the film he was written out, and Shan Yu became the primary villain. Shan Yu’s role had already gone to the incredibly talented Pres Romanillos, which left me character-less—at least until directors Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft asked if I could handle a few characters.

I thought I’d share a little piece from the very early days of “Mulan.” This is a charcoal drawing I did of the original main villain, 𝗕𝗮𝗼 𝗚𝘂𝗻𝗴!
