Way it was described to me is that you’d have the game board in the back of the paper which allowed you to follow the game on the radio as commentary used the same numbered squares for reference. It’s pretty cool tbf.
I think it comes from radio originally, describing where the ball/play is…Which I believe is the origin of the saying “back to square one” too 👍
