These objects survived the First World War. They are my Great Grandfathers, Jules Andre Destrigneville
A helmet.
A medal.
A bundle of letters

A great read! Good luck with the research - happy to help if you need any pointers!
I've written a piece for the Write On! Magazine about my weekend with @thegreatwargroup.bsky.social last month and my first steps into learning to "do history". Please give it a read and let me know what you think..

There’s something not quite right about this depiction of an officer, just can’t put my finger on it….
Spotted in the grounds of the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield recently
Fascinating talk by Dr Viv Newman at the Tank Museum this morning
New poppymas/flying jacket chimera just dropped. The flag profile. The elbow patches. Good lord.
Ok...
What should it say across the back?
Go!
Passed* the memorial to The Rangers this week, just off Tottenham Court Road
(*took a slight diversion from where I was supposed to be going….)
Got to love Ancestry family trees. People too often wanting to make connections without thinking…
Leos Burger up near the gate is a good alternative! Massive portions but it is pricier!
Fantastic project! (this and RTFTF!)
There's a few of you who might like this. Will explain in a thread for those who don't know about The Returned project we ran until 2018. Anyway Cheltenham Civic Soc have not only conserved and researched their collection of crosses, but have created a museum. cheltenham-battlefield-crosses.org
Fancy a trip to Scotland? A warm welcome awaits in Bonnie Dundee. Our second national conference (1st was 2014). Some big names. Should be a great day and you get to see RRS Discovery. #wfa #FWW #GreatWar #FWW #wfatayside @thegreatwargroup.bsky.social
An honour to lay a wreath at the Menin Gate tonight, remembering my Great Great Uncle William MacDuff and the men of the 11th Border Regiment killed in action on 2nd December 1917
Ypres Burger may no longer be with us, but I can highly recommend Leo’s Burger, up near the gate 🤤
Not sure what was more terrifying today - climbing to the top of the bell tower at Messines church, or walking through a field with this beast in it to get to Torreken Farm cemetery!
The grave of Arnold Jacques Chadwick at Adinkerke. Flight Commander, DSC, and ace - all by age 21
First stop today was Zuydcoote Military Cemetery. I paid my respects to Gunner Harry Wayman of Carshalton - 12 years ago I helped to reunite his death plaque with his family but this was the first time I had visited his grave
Busy at the gate tonight
Ypres bound!
Paid a visit today to the grave of Barnes Wallis at St Lawrence's church, Effingham
I hadn't, thanks for sharing! It looks like an update of an old article - I was in touch with the detectorist when I was writing my book

Much more detail about the 119th Brigade is in my book 'No Bad Soldiers' (Helion)
OTD in 1917 119th inf brigade took Bourlon Wood ,key high ground dominating the north of the Cambrai battlefield, and held it for three days. They suffered horrendous casualties.
