currently reading for the first time and it COULD NOT be more pertinent
We could have decided morality matters. We could have frozen Russian assets, stopped buying their gas, and armed Ukraine properly. It is not that morality is inherently irrelevant in the world by some law of nature. It is that we have collectively decided it is.
7. There is the argument that in reality, Trump is right, Zelensky does not have leverage, and moralizing is out of place. I believe that it is up to us to choose how much morality should matter in the world we build.
6. I have heard the phrase “Europe must step up” on dozens of panels I’ve moderated and keynotes I’ve introduced in the past three years. So far, little action has followed. I deeply believe in the power of conversation to coordinate and inform action. But conversation on its own is meaningless.
5. Bullying & berating Zelensky in public will go over wonderfully with two groups of people. For one, Trump and Vance’s domestic supporters. And, of course, Russia is having a field day. Their foreign minister is gleefully celebrating on Twitter.
and Trump says "don't tell us how we're going to feel" ... that could be prevented through more nuance and precision in language.
4. On another strategic note: Zelensky's English is good. I am not always sure it's good enough to navigate high-stakes situations without a translator. When he says "you will feel it" - meaning the US will feel the influence of the war eventually -
Donald Trump consists mostly of ego and cheeseburgers, and does not react well to being argued with, or interrupted, in public. Zelensky understands this. None of this could have been planned on the Ukrainian side.
To say I don’t have the words for this administration’s attitude toward independent media would be a lie. I have them. They aren’t appropriate.
3. I fully empathize with Zelensky. Yet, strategically, this was not one of his most composed moments. He is usually an excellent communicator.
2. A CNN reporter asked who would defend 🇺🇦 minerals if 🇷🇺 were to attack the area. Quite a pertinent question to my mind. Trump, however, thought CNN should “focus on survival instead of asking me these ridiculous questions”.
Instead, a reporter from the far-right conspiratorial outlet Real America’s Voice got to ask President Zelensky why he wasn’t wearing a suit. Just the kind of hard-hitting journalism anyone aspiring to the profession would dream of.
7 thoughts on yesterday’s exchange at the White House, having watched it in its totality:
1. The White House Correspondents’ Association used to decide which journalists covered high-level meetings. Now, this is done by the White House itself. As a result, AP and Reuters were absent yesterday.
das hab ich mir heut auch gedacht.
bad advice.
you can have all the talent in the world, you're never going to outwork truly passionate people, and that will ultimately give their performance an edge over yours in 99% of cases.
Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States of America.
and somehow it's never good when we do
