We are hugely honoured to have won the 2025 MSA Book Prize for The Rise of Pacific Literature: Decolonization, Radical Campuses and Modernism. Thank you to everyone involved. It was a huge joy to work on such a wonderful period in Pacific writing.

Giving students thoughtful, personalized feedback and instruction is not a problem that originates from the difficulty for an instructor to generate feedback, it is a problem that originates from institutions pivoting to student:instructor ratios where that dynamic is not logistically feasible.

Like this from the late crunchy cartoonist Leunig. It's a woman's "sacred role" to envelop her child in a non-tox environment, to put her body between her child and toxic modernity. Personal responsibility for health, and all that responsibility falls on the mother

The endgame of all rightwing crunchiness (anti-vax, anti-childcare, anti-pharmaceuticals during pregnancy and childbirth, MAHA diets, homesteading) is women bearing more sacrificial pain

The net result is the worst of both worlds. Universities invoke the rhetoric of business discipline, but they lack the governance structures that give that discipline bite. They operate without the checks that private ownership provides, yet subject staff and students to the cost-cutting and efficiency drives that profit-maximising firms pursue. The result is waste at the top and insecurity at the bottom.

this is a very sharp piece on why it makes no sense to run universities as if they are businesses. They're not businesses.

So proud of the work our union has done to achieve this. I've been in a lot of change plans in the UK and Aus, and this is the most resounding victory I've ever seen. All other unis should be on notice: your governance needs major reform.

So many of the half-baked AI implementations are happening in professional arenas that have been hollowed out by extraction and divestment. No journalist needs a writing aid unless they’re being paid too little to write too much, no teacher needs a commenting tool unless they’re overextended.
