I think (despite all the discourse about D&D Neopets) the vast majority of licensed games have been absolute bangers - it'd be much easier to name the ones that haven't been (but not very nice)

This thread really makes me think. Although I'd say that playing a one-shot is better than not playing at all - especially if you want to really understand a game

It was great to chat about small group #TTRPG play - there's some really good stuff out there for this

Just been running @jasoncordova.bsky.social 's Beach Blanket Body Bag - fantastic to see the setup create really juicy character subplots and interactions - even before they find the body!

I think the sorcerer is deliberately very swingy, and contains its own solution in that you don't *have* to Gather Power at the start of combat. But I would play it like that, too!

There's definitely a question of frequency here; last year I ran 16 convention one-shots, and it's usually much more (I didn't make either Kraken last year) - I couldn't playtest all them on top of channel recordings and games "for fun!"

I only do it maybe <5% of the time - similarly for recording Actual Play stuff. But I run quite a few one shots, so pacing etc isn't something I worry about

Bit of discourse about playtesting earlier, so here's my question to #TTRPG folk - do you ever playtest convention scenarios?

I always think time travel games need lots of adventures to properly showcase them

If you go eith EnCODEed I'd check out DIE (the TTRPG and/or the comic) for how imaginery worlds adventures can be really about more than dinosaur chases and rope bridges

I think Haunted West is a gold standard for showing the diversity of the west rather than the white Hollywood propaganda of it - well worth a read. I think historical games take real research and nuance to not be problematic (as history often was)

I'm not sure it's that distinct - eg PBTA "Be a fan of the PCs" principle - if I've got a Hardholder in the group the entire game will shift to highlight that

Just ran my first session of @pelgranepress.bsky.social @robheinsoo.bsky.social @jonathantweet.bsky.social 13th Age SECOND EDITION. Absolutely fantastic system, and the upgrades to 2e really add to the excitement in combats - but don't take my word for it, you'll be able to watch it soon!

I average twice a week, or around 100 sessions a year (might beat that this year, but it's early days). I don't have a regular schedule; it's one-shots, short campaigns, and one monthly-ish One Ring campaign that I'm in as a player. Oh and lots of conventions.

I was about to say chargen is generally a poor tutorial, but then running D&D at a games cafe where folks bring their own PCs I see a huge difference between those with paper character sheets and D&D Beyond PCs - the ones with sheets know what their PCs can do, the ones with D&D Beyond often don't
