out of curiosity, what's your use case?
08.08.2025 13:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0ah ok, yeah there's no standard for that, and we don't have a custom API for it. ideally we'd add a FEP-fffd proxy link to the original AP object, but we don't have access to do that.
looks like you ended up using listRecords? obviously not great, but I don't have a better answer right now. sorry.
trying to follow... @melontini.me did fed.brid.gy/docs#identif... (FEP-fffd proxy links) end up working for you here?
08.08.2025 11:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0if you later try to bolt on fundamentally different architecture(s), after the fact, with different constraints and tradeoffs, I think it's usually going to be a bad time for everyone involved.
07.08.2025 20:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0sure. in general, I'm skeptical of trying to force p2p, gossip, etc into ATProto. when you design a protocol, you make very deliberate choices around architecture, topology, Zooko's triangle, etc that the protocol depends on. those concrete choices and tradeoffs are central to the design.

07.08.2025 20:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hmm, relays *are* fan-out relays, right?
Do you mean a relay for just your PDS? Like a proxy that stays online even if your PDS goes offline? Maybe, but at that point I don't know how much it buys you vs just running your PDS itself on a normal server
somewhat true? in practice relays might not love this, some might have logic for learning which PDSes have gone down, which you might accidentally hit. plus appviews and clients may need to fetch blobs from your PDS at any time. but yeah otherwise this might be mostly possible?
07.08.2025 19:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes! @gabboman.at.app.wafrn.net's wafrn does this. Bridgy Fed too.
The powerful part comes when you use account and post links (fed.brid.gy/docs#identif...) to connect the accounts and posts across networks. Tell your friends! π

it's a common idea! Bluesky had specific reasons for making did:plc instead of allowing arbitrary DID methods, though; details in the links above. and supporting DID actor ids in the fediverse would be a *massive* undertaking, and it's unclear how much AP would even allow for it at all.
07.08.2025 15:59 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0(also identity schemes are often chosen in order to provide some of the requirements you're designing for, so often you *can't* choose a scheme that's compatible with other protocols. eg:
github.com/did-method-p...
atproto.com/guides/faq#w... )
That would be ideal! We don't have it now, though, and identity is at the core of these protocols, it's not easy to change later.
The alternative is publishing mappings between accounts, which works pretty well. We have a post on this coming soon! Here's a preview: fed.brid.gy/docs#identif...
W3C vs IETF, FIGHT!
06.08.2025 21:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0yes! one obvious alternative is for platforms and clients to support both. Surf, OpenVibe, Hubzilla, Friendica, wafrn, etc all do that, to various degrees, eg wafrn.net/faq/user.htm...
(btw, feel free to reply to those AP users and say, well, the fediverse mostly doesn't support ATP either π)
New blog post! Bridging vs cross-posting. Theyβre similar, but bridged conversations tend to be more unified across networks, while cross-posting ends up more fragmented.
Feedback is welcome! And friendly reminder, if you appreciate what you do here, feel free to check out our Patreon!
Awesome! Very IndieWeb. We love seeing new indieweb.org/backfeed implementations like this!
For everyone else, also feel free to check out brid.gy, it's a service that does the heavy lifting here for you, which means you need way less custom code on your site. (It's different from Bridgy Fed.)

05.08.2025 18:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0At #Fedicon last weekend, I had the opportunity to present my thoughts on the open social web, what we're building at @anew.social, and what it's taught us about building for people, not platforms.
Our aim is The Last Network Effect. The path to that is building bridges, not walls.
Check it out:
(oh, and sorry, github.com/snarfed/brid... if you meant Bridgy classic instead of Fed)

03.08.2025 20:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hi from afar to everyone at #Fedicon this weekend! Wish I was there. Hope it's great!
I've been vicariously enjoying the stream of posts on robin.live?q=%23FediCon. Props to @reiver.bsky.social for building it, along with spacehost.one, robinfeed.com, and organizing Fedicon itself!

Thank you regardless! And apologies, I don't mean to make you my ChatGPT go-between. I can definitely do that (and search the web) myself. I guess I was more interested in the conversation here!
