i've been reading leguin's Always Coming Home, an anthropological exploration of a totally fictional culture, and also have been really into studying katsuya terada's work. so i'm combining those interests. i want to do at least a few of these, following a day in troll culture.

so if the 1099 says 100, but the earnings say 90, you report the 100 to start with, and later in the process when asked for business expenses and deductions, you say you spent 10. and you do that math for each month and those are your numbers. exactly how it's entered depends on how you file

you report the 1099 numbers bc that's what patreon told the government, but you download that CSV and find the column with "your earnings" and the row for each month on the 1099. you subtract your earnings from the 1099, and you report *that* number as a business expense deduction.

if you want to know how important it is for you to do this math: the fees patreon took from me in 2025 add up to roughly 3 months of income. that's 3 months of income i would have paid taxes on if i didn't deduct the fees from the 1099. 3 months of income i never actually had!

and if you're dumb like me remember that 1099s arrange their numbers horizontally in rows of 2 and not vertically in 2 columns. save yourself from doing your math again.

originally i said to start with the number in the 'total charged' column but that includes card declines, ie money you never actually received. the 1099 number is the correct number to start with.

CORRECTION: you want to START with the numbers on your 1099, and then subtract each month's 'your total earnings' from them. that difference is your deductible business expense.
if your 1099 reports 100 for january, and your earnings are 90, you deduct the 10.

reminder when you're doing your taxes, the number patreon is putting on your 1099 is the gross and they DO NOT exclude all the money they took from you in fees. you need to deduct that yourself as business expenses. an easy ("easy") way to do that is to download your earnings by month
