This looks so interesting, Alyx! Thank you for sharing your plan. Those SNL VH1 parodies are something else lol.

Yes! That would be fun. There would definitely be some parallel stuff happening with MuchMusic at that time, as well as CBC TV's music programs. And then, of course, there's Radio 2, which really began to expand its range into more interesting and experimental places in the 80s and 90s.

Sounds fascinating! I look forward to reading your take on this program and its era when it's ready, Alyx. (but no pressure lol - I can wait.)

Don't know that there is an etiquette. FB Marketplace seems to be akin to the wild west. If I were you, the duration of my wait would be proportional to my interest in the item. That said, win my experience, when someone is late AND doesn't msg, the likeliest outcome has been ghosting.

100%. As Michele Hilmes observes in "The Lost Critical History of Radio," this has been a perennial problem for audio-first media since TV's emergence. There are signs that podcasting may be different, but it's not yet clear that podcasting criticism will evolve to be coherent and durable.

I don't disagree with this take. Then again, good on the TSO for pursuing this creative fundraising activity. Seems like a vital tactic for an era in which a) classical music is losing relevance for much of the pop. and b) it's so expensive that many of those who are interested are priced out.

Not sure of the one great film, but my fave is Mystic River with Black Mass coming in behind.

Brutal. Looks like the organization failed to think through the potential implications of its decision to sever ties with Scotiabank. And now they're asking for federal funding at a particularly bad time. Hard to see how the Giller emerges from this unscathed absent a new corporate sponsor.

Here's a nice, low-effort opportunity for any academics or other writers looking for a bit of low-key accountability.

The 'collective rediscovery of an older practice/object/category' genre of mass media story has been one of the pleasant surprises of the social media era.

This is a great example of the conflicts between the trad norms associated with the academy and realities on the ground today. IMO, the whole adviser-advisee model is in need of a rethink/update, including the outdated cultural dynamics that persist to the detriment of students, faculty, and unis.

Haha. Love this pun. Sometimes when I sit down for a long session I find Warren Zevon's 'Splendid Isolation' running through my mind. Now I'll be thinking about this 'spin' on the term.

It's fitting that Superman should be an immigrant given that he was co-created by one (illustrator Joe Shuster). Actually, it has been argued that the character was strongly informed by both of his creators experiences in Jewish immigrant families: web.archive.org/web/20091115...

I was there from late 2009 to early 2016 for my PhD. It was a great time, though I didn't really explore the area as much I could have (I was pretty preoccupied with work). I have many fond memories of the city and Wisconsin more broadly.

It's important to note that this is also brutal news for the national #publicradio networks as 3 of these programs are distributed nationally. The loss of locally produced nat'l programs will diminish the system and make it less 'national'. Expect more announcements like this in the coming days.

Just occurred to me to add that I think the practice has some validity in that context as the teachers are trying to establish the baseline relationships between the little ones and the kids understand the friend concept. Helps with "we don't hit/bite/hurt friends' and so on.

I think it comes out of daycare/preschool. My 3 y.o will, quite adorably, tell my wife and I that we are "not her best friend(s)" when we do something she doesn't care for. Took a while to figure out that it was due to this phenomenon. FWIW, she's fine with the best friend/friend distinction lol.

How the Grateful Dead’s β€˜Wall of Sound’ System Nearly Bankrupted Them β€” and Changed Concert Audio Forever Grateful Dead's legendary Wall of Sound system, which redefined concert audio, is chronicled in Brian Anderson's new book 'Loud and Clear.'

Nice article here about a new book from @thebanderson.bsky.social on the groundbreaking, and financially ruinous, 'Wall of Sound" the #GratefulDead briefly used in the 1970s. The book looks like a must-read for those with an interest in the Dead and the evolution of live concert technology.

Can't say for sure without having read it, but I would be asking myself whether or not it would be better off as two 6-8K pieces. I've gone both ways and the split was a much better option (of course, that was an historical project with an easy splitting point).
