Your own safe spaces aren't going to have the same boundaries as other people's and that's okay, but we call them safe spaces because they also help contain raw emotions and inelegant expressions of sometimes ugly feelings.

This is also why when people tried to gotcha me by asking if I think straight white men deserve their own safe spaces, my answer is yes? I don't think conversations about gender, sexuality, and race need to be mediated by minorities

Other times I can embody the spirit of "if it's not about you, don't make it about you," and I wind up learning a lot and feeling GNC cis 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 trans solidarity. A place can be not for you at different times in your life. You can age out of the TNG munch. It's okay.

Sometimes my trans friends need to talk about what it feels like to have to exist in a cis society in ways that make me feel horrible as a cis person and I need to leave for my own mental health, but that doesn't make the complaints bad or that space bad, it just means it's not for me!

(If I say "Racefail '09" I'm sure a lot of people will groan, but in a bunch of journal threads I saw firsthand Black women get chastised for using language that the other poster had literally just used to describe her.

It was eye opening)

One problem with trying to do activism on the Internet is it's very easy to destroy context with micro blogging, reposting, screenshots and the like

My own journey to anti-racism involved me saying a lot of asinine things because my priors were messed up! PoC in pain did not need to handle me!

I have a theory that all activist movements need spaces for what used to be called "consciousness raising" by Black activists, and spaces like a help desk where privileged people get exposed to the ideas

And these spaces CANNOT overlap for effective activism

I hew to the ideal that public spaces should be as accessible to as many people as possible as much as possible, but there are a lot of semi public spaces that do not exist for everyone. Not all working groups need to be as accessible as the help desk.

I want to springboard from this because I think the refusal to get in community from privileged folks in response to rhetoric that hurts their feelings is a sign that they/we often don't know how to deal with our own discomfort, but also, some spaces aren't for you and that's okay?
