Ann has great genes. Her mom, Carolyn, is a retired Texas judge, and her dad Jake was a Texas legislator. All three of them were and are great lawyers and public servants. So happy to see her out front speaking for her colleagues.

Yep. Every statewide
officeholder in Texas was a Democrat when we moved here from NYC in 1983. Some of them were progressive Dems like Ann Richards and Jim Hightower.

I get the point about Mays playing too long before retiring at 42 and know you're talking about his baseball career. But speaking as an old Mays fan, I'm sure happy about his very long life.

Fortunately, I can participate in democracy without subscribing to the NYTimes and paying it money to cause me headaches and to feel angry at people like Eric Lipton. Life is too short and I'm better off if I get my information from healthier sources.

Once again happy that I unsubscribed to the NYTimes last year.

Amen. We have a friend who has served honorably for 10 years and is now an Army sergeant. There could be no better soldier. This is ruining his life.

Wow. He played hard and well after ‘52. We are so much fortunate now to have better tools to take care of ourselves. It’s still hard, but must have been so much harder for him.

Books say he wasn’t diagnosed until after he retired. Type 1 diabetes can manifest at any age. Older adults can develop “Late Autoimmune Disease in Adults,” or LADA, which fits what I know of Jackie Robinson’s illness. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_...

His type 1 diabetes led to his early death in 1972 when I was a teenaged baseball fan. I was diagnosed 11 months later, when T1D still meant a death. New technology has changed that. Grateful for these medical advances, hopeful for more, and fearful for the future of medical research.
