On Oct. 16, 1953 Fidel Castro spoke for 4 hours at his sentencing for the July 26 attack on the Moncada Barracks, concluding with the words "History will absolve me." Using this as a title, the speech became the manifesto of the July 26 Movement.

Kyuichi Tokuda, an early member and leader of the Japanese Communist Party, died in exile in Beijing on Oct. 14, 1953 following a purge of Communists from elected offices by US occupation forces. Tokuda spent 18 years in prison from 1928 to 1945.

Captured Soviet Red Army officer and Jew, Alexander Pechersky led a revolt at the Nazi Sobibor death camp in German-occupied Poland on Oct. 14, 1943 in which most of the camp guards were killed and 300 Jewish prisoners were able to escape.
