In January of 2002, I went with the band and we all got matching tattoos to celebrate their record contract with Epic Records. In the summer of 2003, every time I turned on MTV, the video for “Shatterday” was playing. It was such a wild and magical time.

Within minutes of meeting him, he told me he was going to start a band and they would put out records and tour all over the world. And then I watched him do exactly that. I saw Vendetta Red play their first show at Gibsons in January of 1999.

In October of 1998, Zach was the first person I met when I moved to Seattle. He had just moved here from Bakersfield, CA. We worked together at the Sam Goody that was on the corner of 3rd and Pike.

I’m also a very big fan of the work Justin does as a union organizer. Workers unite!

Justin Foley, musician and union organizer. Justin plays guitar and yells in a band called the Austerity Program. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. The lock screen on my phone is the artwork from their Black Madonna record. They make me want to make music.

Keep making music. Also, Sohrab’s instagram is just about the most Brooklyn thing I’ve ever seen. It’s fantastic!

One of his band mates in Savak is an acquaintance of mine I’ve known for almost 20 years. Sohrab recently helped put together a book of Rick Froberg’s artwork. The book tour for that book brought him to Seattle and that gave me the opportunity to meet him and talk to him for a second.

Sohrab Habibion, musician. Sohrab’s bands include Edsel, Obits, and currently, Savak. The power of music to bring people together is pretty amazing. I’d never met Sohrab, but I tried to see Obits every time they came to Seattle. I think I only missed them once.

But Kennedy has never stopped tearing it up behind the mic. His new band, Benzo, is great.

I met Kennedy a short time later, probably at the Funhouse or the Comet, maybe the Greenhouse. These days that tornado energy is much more focused. Last spring he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications from UW and now he’s working on his master’s.

The first time I saw this guy screaming into a microphone was 2011. The band was Monogamy Party. He was shirtless and rolling around on the floor of the Black Lodge as the rest of the band cranked out equally chaotic noisy music. He was like a tornado.

When we would take photos of Halo, to get him to look towards the camera, we would ask him, “did you see Skippy?”

And there’s the time Brandy’s purse, wallet, keys, and car were stolen and Skippy rushed over to change the locks on our house. But the most important thing I want people to know about Skippy is that my dog, Halo, absolutely loved him. And Halo only loved a handful of people.

I could tell everyone about all the bands Skippy has played guitar in, like his current band X Suns (it’s pronounced, ‘ten suns’). I could talk about all the good times and bands we’ve seen together in the past 10 years.

When I was scrambling to find a replacement, the booking agent suggested Kinski and I remember thinking, “That’d be great, but they’re too big and I don’t know them, there’s no way they’ll do it”. But they agreed and it was an amazing night. I love that Chris and Kinski just keep making music.

Back in 2009 I was putting together a show to celebrate my birthday and at the last minute the headlining band had to drop out.

I’ve seen Kinski perform well over 50 times. And every time I see them, I’m in awe of how great they are. Chris’s dense, fuzzed-out guitar tone always brings joy to my heart.

He’s made some fantastic music videos and short films and is currently working on a full length feature. A lot of his work could be filed under dark comedy and horror. Jerry is also teaching and guiding young filmmakers we’ll all probably be watching in the future.

The wild thing was he said we’d met in Ogden, Utah, which sounded plausible since it was where I’d gone to college and close to where I grew up. It turned out to be mistaken identity, but we instantly bonded through our shared memories of the Ogden area. Jerry is a filmmaker and an educator.

I believe I first met Jerry at the Josephine (now the Woodland Theater). I think Monogamy Party and maybe Rabbits were playing. It would’ve been around 2012. Nik Christofferson introduced us, but Jerry insisted we’d already met.

But we had a promo copy of Freak*on*ica that I would crank up before we opened and after we closed. GvsB were a huge part of the soundtrack to that part of my life. Besides still making music with GvsB, Johnny has been running Akashic Books for the past 30 years.

When I got to Seattle, my first job was as the assistant manager at the Sam Goody that was on 3rd and Pike. The manager of the store had a strict policy of only playing rap and R&B during business hours.

Johnny Temple, bass player in Soulside and Girls Against Boys. In the fall of 1998, the last bands I saw in Salt Lake City before moving to Seattle were Girls Against Boys and Garbage at the Wasatch Events Center.

I will always be grateful to him for that time he got me into a sold out show at Chop Suey so I could hang out with Brandy back when she and I had just started dating. If you’ve seen the movie About a Son, there’s a scene where the camera is following him around Capitol Hill.

Unnatural Helpers were such a great band. I saw them a lot over the years and I always loved seeing Andrew on stage playing bass. I also got to see his other band, the Trashies, a few times.
