I think the race organiser - Chris Brasher - (Roger Bannister’s four minute mile pacemaker) had seen the Boston Marathon and thought London could stage one

He had a column in the Sunday Times and that’s how I found out about it

Thought it would be a lark

We had to run on the pavements with the traffic running, but still had to cross junctions

In the first 1981 race I didn’t even have proper running shoes

My feet looked like liver afterwards

I think there was just about 5,000 ran, not like the 40,000 these days

We were dodging traffic near the end. They didn’t shut it all day like now

I did 4 hrs 15

I ran in the first three London Marathons

I wanted to beat 4 hours

I went close each time

Then in 2000

I did it!

I like the idea of Cherki and Phil rotating centre and wide like Phil and KDB did

If Rodri ever gets back to his former heights I’d love to see Pep play them both as 10s as he did with KDB and Merlin in the Centurions team

The steam engines draw crowds of enthusiasts but do run everyday along a 15 miles track
